2. Why teach this lesson?
According to Development Profiles, three year old children should sort objects logically on the
basis of one dimension, such as color, shape, or size.
The Ohio kindergarten standards state that the child should, “Classify objects into given
categories; count the numbers of objects in each category and sort the categories by count.” We
need to prepare children for this.
This activity will give children the opportunity to sort objects by color and count each group. It
will incorporate sorting and comparing.
3. What will they learn?
The child will be able to sort objects by color and count them.
They will be able to sort and classify objects by one or more attributes.
4. What will you need?
Pompoms
Laminated activity sheets
Dry erase markers
Bowls for pompoms
5. Advanced Preparation
Prepare activity sheets that have spaces within which
children will place pompoms and a section to write
the total for each color. Laminate them to enable
reuse.
6. What to do!
1. Talk about colors and review them with the children.
2. Provide each child with a bowl of pompoms, and an activity sheet.
3. The children, with direction, will sort their pompoms by color onto the designated areas on
the page.
4. As the children finish, count the number of pompoms in each color area.
5. Children write each total on the activity sheet.
6. Briefly discuss which has more or fewer pompoms.
