2. The Annunciation
Luke 1: 26 – 38
Words in bold are sung
In mense autem sexto, missus est Angelus Gabriel a
Deo in civitatem Galilææ, cui nomen Nazereth, ad
Virginem desponsatam viro, cuit nomen erat Joseph,
de domo david, et nomen virginis Maria. Et
ingressusu Angelus ad eam dixit:
In the sixth month, God sent the angel Gabriel to
Nazareth, a town in Galilee, to a virgin pledged to
be married to a man named Joseph, a descendant of
David. The virgin's name was Mary. The angel went
to her and said,
Ave gratia plena: Dominus tecum: Benedicata tu
in mulieribus.
"Greetings, you who are highly favored! The
Lord is with you."
Quæ cum audisset, turbata est in sermone eius, et
cogitabat quails esset ista salutation. Ei ait Angelus
ei:
Mary was greatly troubled at his words and
wondered what kind of greeting this might be. But
the angel said to her,
Ne timeas Maria, invenisti enim gratiam apud
Deum. Ecce concipies in utero, et paries filium,
et vocabis nomen IESUM.
"Do not be afraid, Mary, you have found favor
with God. You will be with child and give birth
to a son, and you are to give him the name Jesus.
Hic erit magnus, et Filius Altissimi vocabitur, et
dabit illi Dominus Deus sedem David patris eius: et
regnabit in domo Iacob in æternum et regni eius non
erit finis.
He will be great and will be called the Son of the
Most High. The Lord God will give him the throne
of his father David, and he will reign over the house
of Jacob forever; his kingdom will never end."
Quomodo fiet istud, quoniam virum non
cognosco?
"How will this be," Mary asked the angel, "since I
am a virgin?"
Et respondens Angelus dixit ei: Spiritus Sanctus
superveniet in te, et virtus Altissimi obumbrabit
tibi. Ideoque et quod nascetur ex te Sanctum,
vocabitur Filius Dei.
The angel answered, "The Holy Spirit will come
upon you, and the power of the Most High will
overshadow you. So the holy one to be born will
be called the Son of God.
Et ecce Elisabeth cognate tua, et ipsa concepit
filium in senesctute sua: et his mensis sextus est illi,
quæ vocabitur sterilis:
Even Elizabeth your relative is going to have a child
in her old age, and she who was said to be barren is
in her sixth month.
Quia non erit impossibile apud Deum omne
verbum.
For nothing is impossible with God."
Dixit autem Maria: Ecce ancilla Domini, fiat mihi
secundum verbum tuum.
Then Mary said: “Behold, I am the handmaid of
the Lord. Let it be done to me according to your
word.
Et discessit ab illa Angelus. And the Angel departed from her.
