become a day to day affair in even small companies. Every other day a Joe comes to
his friends at bar and say "hey Fellas, guess what I got a pink slip too". Engineers are
probably the worst hit of all the working class. IT companies kicked engineers in
thousands at a time.
Engineers are the backbone of industry and technology. We just can't do without
them. Even in this recession, hiring engineers is mandatory for companies, though not
in so big numbers. It's true our budgets are tight and orders are not coming by easily.
But freezing recruitment for 3 years in a row would mean you have isolated yourself
form fresh ideas and talent for a long span. Old employees are always an asset but
some times the employers are happy to let old employees switch over because they
make room for fresh talent. More over a fresh graduate will also weigh less on the
employers' budget.
In the good times before this recession we used to hear news like "TCS is hiring ten
thousand engineers this year", "Infosys is hiring 12,000 this year", and similar other
announcements. In my graduation days we used to have campus recruitment drives
where 150 and more students used to be hired by a single employer in a day. But now
we hear Citi Group firing 25,000 employees, Lehman Brothers going bankrupt. Times
have changed but we are optimistic about the return of good times soon.
Since the recruitment of engineers is currently at a lower ebb, experts have certain
advises for us. The need for quality manpower, particularly engineers, will always be
there. If you have the talent you will be honored. It may not be the best time to press
for a high pay package but it definitely is the time to prove your worth to the
company. Once the recession recedes you will be duly honored for your contributions
in terms of financial growth and higher position.
