1. Inspect all parts and clean all parts. If any parts are worn or damaged, use new Caterpillar
parts for replacement.
2. Inspect all seals. Damaged seals must be replaced. Use new Caterpillar seals for
replacement.

Sudden release of spring force can cause injury.
To prevent the possibility of injury, follow the procedure to relieve the
spring pressure.
3. Install the O-ring seals on plugs (49). Install valve spool (50), spring guides (52), springs
(51), and plugs (49) in housing (2) .

4. Install the O-ring seal on plug (48). Install poppet (46), spring (47), and plug (48) in housing
(2) .
5. Install slipper (43) on hollow piston (44). Install seal rings (45) on hollow piston (44) .
6. Repeat Step 5 for hollow piston (41) .
7. Install servo pistons (41) and (42) in housing (2) .

8. Install needle bearing (40) in the housing.
9. Install locating pin (38) and valve plate (36) in housing (2) .
10. Install dowels (37) and gasket (39) on housing (2) .

11. Install washer (35), spring (33), and washer (32) in cylinder block (28). Put the cylinder
block in a suitable press. Install a suitable piece of square steel stock against washer (32).
Compress spring (33) and use Tooling (A) to install retaining ring (34). Slowly release the
spring compression.
Note: Position pin retainer (30) at the top of the cylinder block splines.
12. Install pins (31) and pin retainer (30) in the cylinder block.

13. Install retainer guide (29) on the cylinder block.
14. Install pistons (26) in slipper guide (27). Install the slipper guide and the pistons in the
cylinder block (28) .

15. Use Tool (B) to install cylinder block assembly (25) in housing (2) .
16. Install swashplate (24) in the housing.
17. Install bearing (22) on shaft (21). Use Tooling (C) to install retaining ring (23) .

18. Install shaft (21) and the bearing in front cover (17). Use Tooling (A) to install retaining
ring (20) .
19. Install dowels (19) in front cover (17). Apply Tooling (B) to journal bearings (18). Install
journal bearings (18) on the front cover and dowels.

20. Position front cover (17) on the gasket and housing (2). Install bolts (16) .
21. Apply Tooling (D) on the inside diameter of lip seal (14). Install the seal in front cover (17)
and retaining ring (15) .

22. Install O-ring seal (11) and servo stop (13) in servo cover (6). Position spring (9) and servo
cover (6) on housing (2) and install bolts (4) .

23. Install O-ring seal (10) in servo cover (5). Position spring (8), stop (12), spring (7), and
servo cover (5) on the housing. Install two longer bolts and install two original bolts (3).
Remove the two longer bolts and install the two remaining original bolts.
24. Install caps and fitting (1) from housing (2) .
End By: Install the piston motor (drum propel). Refer to Disassembly and Assembly, "Piston
Motor (Drum Propel) - Install".

Piston Motor (Drum Propel) - Install

Installation Procedure
1. Install the O-ring seal on the drum propel motor.
2. Install drum propel motor (1) and bolts (3) .

3. Connect hose assemblies (1) on drum propel motor (1) .
4. Fill the final drive planetary with oil. Refer to Operation and Maintenance Manual for the
correct procedure.

Start By:
A. Remove the drum. Refer to Disassembly and Assembly, "Drum - Remove".
NOTICE
Care must be taken to ensure that fluids are contained during
performance of inspection, maintenance, testing, adjusting and repair
of the product. Be prepared to collect the fluid with suitable containers
before opening any compartment or disassembling any component
containing fluids.
Refer to Special Publication, NENG2500, "Caterpillar Tools and Shop
Products Guide" for tools and supplies suitable to collect and contain
fluids on Caterpillar products.
Dispose of all fluids according to local regulations and mandates.

1. Position wood blocks on both sides of the drum.
2. Drain the oil from the final drive planetary into a suitable container. The capacity of the
final drive planetary is approximately 2.3 L (0.6 US gal).
3. Remove bolts (1) and remove propel motor (2) .
4. Attach a suitable lifting device and Tooling (A) to final drive planetary assembly (3) .
5. Remove bolts (4) and remove final drive planetary assembly (3). The weight of the final
drive planetary assembly is approximately 180 kg (397 lb).

6. Attach a suitable lifting device and Tooling (B) to plate (5). Remove bolts (6). Remove
plate (5) from the final drive planetary (7). The weight of the plate is approximately 52 kg
(115 lb).
7. Remove bolts (8). Use two persons to remove plate (9) from final drive planetary (7). The
weight of the plate is approximately 28 kg (62 lb).

Start By:
A. Remove the final drive planetary. Refer to Disassembly and Assembly, "Final Drive Planetary
(Drum Propel) - Remove".
Personal injury can result from being struck by parts propelled by a
released spring force.
Make sure to wear all necessary protective equipment.
Follow the recommended procedure and use all recommended tooling to
release the spring force.

1. Place the final drive planetary in a press. Compress the springs under retaining disc (2) enough to
eliminate pressure on retaining ring (1). Remove the retaining ring.
2. Remove retaining disc (2) .
3. Remove 12 large springs (4) and four small springs (3) from brake (5) .
4. Remove brake piston (5), O-ring seals (6), and back up rings (7) .
5. Remove screw (8) and input coupling (9) .

6. Remove four steel brake discs (10) and three friction brake discs (11) .
7. Remove retaining ring (12) and cover (13) from input stage ring wheel (14) .

8. Remove bolts (15) and input stage ring wheel (14) from ring wheel (16) .
9. Remove O-ring seals (17) from input stage ring wheel (14) .
10. Remove retaining ring (18), input stage sun gear (19), and input shaft (20) .

11. Remove input stage planet gears (21) and input planet carrier (22) as a unit.
12. Remove retaining rings (23), retaining washers (24), input stage planet gears (21), and 54 needle
bearings (25) .
13. Remove middle stage sun gear (26) .
14. Remove middle stage planet gears (27) and middle stage planet carrier (28) as a unit.

15. Remove retaining rings (29), retaining washers (30), middle stage planet gears (27), and 108 needle
bearings (31) .
16. Remove output stage sun pinion (32) and ring wheel (16) .
17. Remove O-ring seal (33) .

18. Remove retaining rings (34). Use a suitable puller and remove output stage planet gears (35) .
19. Secure hub (37) to a suitable table.
20. Use Tooling (A) and remove ring nut (36). It may be necessary to apply heat to the ring nut in order
to remove the ring nut.
21. Remove rotating housing (38) and bearing (39) .

23. Remove spacer (41), shims (42), and bearing (43) .
24. Remove the first half of duo-cone seal gp. (44) .
