Preface
This manual has been prepared by Yamaha primarily for use by Yamaha dealers and their trained
mechanics when performing maintenance procedures and repairs to Yamaha equipment. It has
been written to suit the needs of persons who have the Bronze Technical Certificate of the YTA
(Yamaha Technical Academy) marine or the equivalent basic understanding of the mechanical and
electrical concepts and procedures inherent in the work, for without such knowledge attempted
repairs or service to the equipment could render it unsafe or unfit for use.
Because Yamaha has a policy of continuously improving its products, models may differ in detail
from the descriptions and illustrations given in this publication. Use only the latest edition of this
manual. Authorized Yamaha dealers are notified periodically of modifications and significant
changes in specifications and procedures, and these are incorporated in successive editions of this
manual. Also, up-to-date parts information is available on YDS (Yamaha Dealer System). Additional
information and up-to-date information on Yamaha products and services are available on YDS

INFO General information
Safety while working
To prevent an accident or injury and to pro-
vide quality service, observe the following
safety procedures.
Rotating part
• Hands, feet, hair, jewelry, clothing, personal
flotation device straps, and so on, can
become entangled with internal rotating
parts of the engine, resulting in serious
injury or death.
• Keep the top cowling installed whenever
possible. Do not remove or install the top
cowling when the engine is running.
• Only operate the engine with the top cowl-
ing removed according to the specific
instructions in the manual. Keep hands,
feet, hair, jewelry, clothing, personal flota-
tion device straps, and so on, away from
any exposed moving parts.
Hot part
During and after operation, engine parts are
hot enough to cause burns. Do not touch any
parts under the top cowling until the engine
has cooled.
Electric shock
Do not touch any electrical parts while start-
ing or operating the engine. Otherwise, shock
or electrocution could result.
Handling of gasoline
• Gasoline is highly flammable. Keep gaso-
line and all flammable products away from
heat, sparks, and open flames.
• Gasoline is poisonous and can cause injury
or death. Handle gasoline with care. Never
siphon gasoline by mouth. If you swallow
some gasoline, inhale a lot of gasoline
vapor, or get some gasoline in your eyes,
see your doctor immediately. If gasoline
spills on your skin, wash with soap and
water. If gasoline spills on your clothing,
change your clothes.
Ventilation
• Gasoline vapor and exhaust gas are
heavier than air and extremely poisonous. If
gasoline vapor or exhaust gas is inhaled in
large quantities, it may cause loss of con-
sciousness and death within a short time.
• When test running an engine indoors (for
example, in a water tank) make sure to do
so where adequate ventilation can be main-
tained.

Self-protection
• Protect your eyes by wearing safety
glasses or safety goggles during all opera-
tions involving drilling and grinding, or when
using an air compressor.
• Protect your hands and feet by wearing pro-
tective gloves and safety shoes when nec-
essary.
Working with crane
• Outboard motors weighing 18.0 kg (39.7 lb)
and over must be carried by a crane.
• Use the wire ropes of adequate strength,
and lift up the outboard motor using the
three-point suspension.
• If the outboard motor does not have three
or more points to be suspended, support it
using additional ropes, or the like, so that
the outboard motor can be lifted and carried
in a stable manner.
Part, lubricant, and sealant
Use only genuine Yamaha parts, lubricants,
and sealants, or those recommended by
Yamaha, when servicing or repairing the out-
board motor.
Handling of sealant
• Wear protective gloves to protect your skin,
when using the sealants.
• See the material safety data sheet issued
by the manufacturer. Some of the sealants
may be harmful to human health.
Special service tool
Use the recommended special service tools
to work safely, and to protect parts from dam-
age.

Tightening torque
When tightening nuts, bolts, and screws, fol-
low the tightening instructions provided
throughout the manual. If the tightening order
is not specified, tighten the large sizes first,
and then tighten the small sizes, starting from
the center and moving outward.
Non-reusable part
Always use new gaskets, seals, O-rings, cot-
ter pins, and so on, when installing or assem-
bling parts.
Disassembly and assembly
• Use compressed air to remove dust and dirt
during disassembly.
• Apply specified grease to the contact sur-
faces of moving parts before assembly.
• Check that moving parts operate normally
after assembly.

How to use this manual
Manual format
The format of this manual has been designed to make service procedures clear and easy to under-
stand. Use the following information as a guide for effective and quality service.
• Parts are shown and detailed in an exploded diagram and are listed in the component list (see a
in the following figure for an example page).
• The component list consists of part names and quantities, as well as bolt and screw dimensions
(see b in the following figure).
• Symbols are used to indicate important aspects of a procedure, such as the grade of lubricant and
the lubrication points (see c in the following figure).
• Tightening torque specifications are provided in the exploded diagrams (see d in the following fig-
ure), and in the related detailed instructions. Some torque specifications are listed in stages as
torque figures or angles in degrees.
• Separate procedures and illustrations are used to explain the details of removal, checking, and
installation where necessary (see e in the following figure for an example page).

For troubleshooting procedures, see Chapter 4, “Troubleshooting.”

Command Link Plus system
The Command Link Plus system consists of the new Digital Electronic Control, main switch, push-
button type engine start/stop button, Command Link Plus Multifunction Color Gauge, Command
Link Plus network, Y-COP, Command Link Plus Gateway, Command Link Plus Analog Gauge Inter-
face, and Command Link Plus Multisensor.

The new Digital Electronic Control starts and stops the engine using a CAN signal, which allows the
operator to start the engine with a single touch combining it with an outboard motor capable of one-
touch engine starts.
For multi-engine applications, attaching an ALL engine start/stop button allows the operator to start
all outboard motors.
Unlike existing Digital Electronic Controls, the neutral position of the control lever is detected only by
the LPS.
This system is compatible with the Command Link Plus network so that it can be equipped with the
Command Link Plus Multifunction Color Gauge.
The new Digital Electronic Control is also compatible with Command Link network. However, the
Command Link Plus network cannot be used with the Command Link network simultaneously.
Switching the engine starter circuit will be required when using outboard motors compatible with
existing Digital Electronic Controls in combination with a new Digital Electronic Control (except for
single station models). The default setting is to use the engine starter circuit of outboard motors
compatible with the new Digital Electronic Control.

New functions and combination with existing control system
The Command Link Plus system can be used in combination with existing Digital Electronic Control,
engine start switches, and outboard motors that are compatible with existing Digital Electronic Con-
trol. However, the new functions of the Command Link Plus system are not available in some config-
urations.

Authorization system
The Digital Electronic Control ECM has its authentication ID recognized by the engine ECM, and the
Digital Electronic Control ECM verifies the engine ECM using the authentication ID when the system
is activated. If the authentication ID does not match, the engine cannot be started.
Reset the authentication ID on the engine ECM using YDIS Ver. 1.33 to allow the engine ECM to
recognize the Digital Electronic Control ECM again. Once the engine ECM is reset, connect the Dig-
ital Electronic Control ECM to the engine ECM, and the engine ECM will recognize the authentica-
tion ID of the Digital Electronic Control ECM automatically, allowing the Digital Electronic Control
ECM to take control of the engine operation.
When the engine ECM and Digital Electronic Control ECM authentication ID do not match, neither
the active indicator nor the alert indicator comes on.

Engine start and stop control
Under the new Digital Electronic Control system, the Digital Electronic Control ECM sends an
engine start and stop request that causes the engine to start or stop.
When the engine start switch or engine start/stop button is used to send an engine start and engine
stop signal, the Digital Electronic Control ECM sends an engine start and stop signal to the engine
ECM based on the engine start and stop status.
The engine ECM starts or stops the engine, depending on its current state.
When starting the engine using the ALL engine start/stop button, an engine start signal is sent to
the engine ECM in order of PORT and STBD for twin engine installations, and to PORT, center and
STBD in order for triple engine installations.
Pushing the ALL engine start/stop button when any of the outboard engines are stopped causes the
Digital Electronic Control ECM to send a stop request to all engine ECMs.

Shift-in prevention control in high-speed range
When the control lever is moved quickly, for example, from the fully open F position a directly to the
fully open R position while the engine speed is higher than the predetermined level (approximately
1500 r/min), the Digital Electronic Control ECM prevents gear shift until the engine speed is
decreased to below the level for which the gear shift is enabled.
Shifting to neutral starts once the control lever is moved beyond the gear shift enabling threshold b.
The throttle valve is kept at fully closed position even after the control lever reaches notch point R.
The actual gearshift is kept at N by the engine ECM until the engine speed reaches point c where
the gearshift is enabled.
Once the engine speed is decreased to 1500 r/min, gear shift operation to R starts at point c. After
gear shift position d, the throttle opening is controlled to the position corresponding to the Digital
Electronic Control lever position. A similar control process occurs when the control lever is moved
quickly directly from the fully open R position to the fully open F position.

Synchronizing control
This control is used to synchronize engine speeds for twin outboard motor installations. When the
relative positioning of the control levers for the twin type stays within the synchronizing control range
for the specified period, the engine speed of the STBD outboard motor is synchronized with that of
the PORT outboard motor.
The same applies to the triple outboard motor installation. Under synchronizing control, the center
outboard motor runs at the same speed as the PORT outboard motor. The synchronization control
is canceled once the angular difference between the two control levers is out of the predetermined
control range.

PTT control
The Digital Electronic Control ECM causes the PTT relay to activate the PTT mechanism in accor-
dance with the input from the switches which are installed at the main station, sub station, and the
bottom cowling respectively.
The following table shows the PTT operations corresponding to the independent or simultaneous
PTT switch operations. Operation at the sub station cannot be activated while the engine start
switch or main switch is OFF since the effective operating station cannot be changed unless the
engine start switch or main switch is turned to ON.

Tilt limiter
A tilt angle limiter setting function has been added to the PTT control. This function prevents the top
cowling from striking the motor well on the boat when the outboard motor is fully tilted up. The tilt
limit position set by this function ranges from the maximum tilt angle to approximately minus 4°–17°.
The tilt limiter for PORT, STBD, and center outboard motors needs to be configured separately.
The tilt limit position is set using YDIS (ver. 1.33 or later). See “Setting the tilt limiter (for applicable
models)” (3-39), or “YDIS Instruction Manual.”

Triple outboard motor operation
Selecting the outboard motor
The engine selector switch a allows boat operators to change the mode of operable outboard motor
between ALL mode in which the PORT, center, and STBD outboard motors are operable, P and S
mode in which the PORT and STBD outboard motors are operable, and C mode in which the center
outboard motor is operable. Start all three outboard motor engines and then push the engine selec-
tor switch a once. The P and S mode is entered. Pushing the engine selector switch a twice will
change to the C mode. Then, operating mode will return to the initial condition (ALL mode) by push-
ing the switch once more.
The outboard motors currently selected can be determined by checking the active indicator b light-
ing positions on the Digital Electronic Control.

Dual station control (for triple outboard motor installation)
The station selector switch switches the effective operating station between the main station and the
sub station. The effective operating station can be changed when the main switch is ON, and all
control levers at the main station and sub station are in the N position. Note that the effective operat-
ing station cannot be changed for the outboard motors on which the main switch is OFF. The active
indicator on the Digital Electronic Control box comes on, once the relevant operating station is acti-
vated.
A Turning the main switch to ON selects the main station as the effective operating station. The
active indicator on the Digital Electronic Control at the main station comes on.
B Pushing the station selector switch at the sub station once while all control levers at both the
main station and the sub station are in the N position transfers the control functions of all the out-
board motors to sub station.
C Gearshift and throttle opening can be controlled by operating the control levers at the sub station.

Command Link Plus Multifunction Color Gauge
The Command Link Plus Multifunction Color Gauge can display engine information for up to three
outboard motors on a single display.
In addition to information on outboard motors, it can also display boat information.
The USB interface on the rear of the gauge can be used to input and output gauge settings, and to
input image for display on the startup screen.
When starting the Command Link Plus Multifunction Color Gauge for the first time, or when it is
reset, configuring the number of outboard motors mounted on the boat will be required. See “Con-
figuring the number of outboard motors” (3-45).

for analog displays) turns a paler color.
• Digital displays
Displays the engine speed in 100 r/min (“1” 100 r/min) increments.
Displays “0” for engine speeds of less than 300 r/min.
Display “99” flashes for engine speeds of more than 10000 r/min.
Displays “– –” when no data on engine speed is being received.
• Analog displays
Displays the engine speed per minute in 1 r/min increments.

Cooling water temperature display
Either analog or digital display can be selected.
• Digital displays
Displays engine cooling water temperature in 5 stages. In normal operating conditions, the display is
in the center of the meter. No cursor is displayed when there is no data on cooling water tempera-
ture being received.
• Analog displays
The engine cooling water temperature is displayed in increments of 0.1 ºC.
No needle is displayed when there is no data on cooling water temperature being received.
Battery voltage display
Either analog or digital (bar graphs and numeric displays) display can be selected.
• Digital displays
Battery voltage for starting the engine is displayed in either 5 stages or 0.1 V increments.
For numeric displays, the display flashes when battery voltage is less than 12 V or greater than 16 V.
No cursor, or alternatively, “– –. – V” is displayed when no data on battery voltage is being received.
• Analog displays
Battery voltage for starting the engine is displayed in 0.01 V increments.
The needles indicate 11 when battery voltage for starting the engine is less than 11 V.
The needles indicate 17 when battery voltage for starting the engine is greater than 17 V.
No needle is displayed when there is no data on battery voltage being received.

  • 2. Preface This manual has been prepared by Yamaha primarily for use by Yamaha dealers and their trained mechanics when performing maintenance procedures and repairs to Yamaha equipment. It has been written to suit the needs of persons who have the Bronze Technical Certificate of the YTA (Yamaha Technical Academy) marine or the equivalent basic understanding of the mechanical and electrical concepts and procedures inherent in the work, for without such knowledge attempted repairs or service to the equipment could render it unsafe or unfit for use. Because Yamaha has a policy of continuously improving its products, models may differ in detail from the descriptions and illustrations given in this publication. Use only the latest edition of this manual. Authorized Yamaha dealers are notified periodically of modifications and significant changes in specifications and procedures, and these are incorporated in successive editions of this manual.   • 6. 0-1 GEN INFO General information Safety while working To prevent an accident or injury and to pro- vide quality service, observe the following safety procedures. Rotating part • Hands, feet, hair, jewelry, clothing, personal flotation device straps, and so on, can become entangled with internal rotating parts of the engine, resulting in serious injury or death. • Keep the top cowling installed whenever possible. Do not remove or install the top cowling when the engine is running. • Only operate the engine with the top cowl- ing removed according to the specific instructions in the manual. Keep hands, feet, hair, jewelry, clothing, personal flota- tion device straps, and so on, away from any exposed moving parts. Hot part During and after operation, engine parts are hot enough to cause burns. Do not touch any parts under the top cowling until the engine has cooled. Electric shock Do not touch any electrical parts while start- ing or operating the engine. Otherwise, shock or electrocution could result. Handling of gasoline • Gasoline is highly flammable. Keep gaso- line and all flammable products away from heat, sparks, and open flames. • Gasoline is poisonous and can cause injury or death. Handle gasoline with care. Never siphon gasoline by mouth. If you swallow some gasoline, inhale a lot of gasoline vapor, or get some gasoline in your eyes, see your doctor immediately. If gasoline spills on your skin, wash with soap and water. If gasoline spills on your clothing, change your clothes. Ventilation • Gasoline vapor and exhaust gas are heavier than air and extremely poisonous. If gasoline vapor or exhaust gas is inhaled in large quantities, it may cause loss of con- sciousness and death within a short time. • When test running an engine indoors (for example, in a water tank) make sure to do so where adequate ventilation can be main- tained.
  • 7. 0-2 Safety while working 0 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8 9 10 A Self-protection • Protect your eyes by wearing safety glasses or safety goggles during all opera- tions involving drilling and grinding, or when using an air compressor. • Protect your hands and feet by wearing pro- tective gloves and safety shoes when nec- essary. Working with crane • Outboard motors weighing 18.0 kg (39.7 lb) and over must be carried by a crane. • Use the wire ropes of adequate strength, and lift up the outboard motor using the three-point suspension. • If the outboard motor does not have three or more points to be suspended, support it using additional ropes, or the like, so that the outboard motor can be lifted and carried in a stable manner. Part, lubricant, and sealant Use only genuine Yamaha parts, lubricants, and sealants, or those recommended by Yamaha, when servicing or repairing the out- board motor. Handling of sealant • Wear protective gloves to protect your skin, when using the sealants. • See the material safety data sheet issued by the manufacturer. Some of the sealants may be harmful to human health. Special service tool Use the recommended special service tools to work safely, and to protect parts from dam- age.
  • 8. 0-3 GEN INFO General information Tightening torque When tightening nuts, bolts, and screws, fol- low the tightening instructions provided throughout the manual. If the tightening order is not specified, tighten the large sizes first, and then tighten the small sizes, starting from the center and moving outward. Non-reusable part Always use new gaskets, seals, O-rings, cot- ter pins, and so on, when installing or assem- bling parts. Disassembly and assembly • Use compressed air to remove dust and dirt during disassembly. • Apply specified grease to the contact sur- faces of moving parts before assembly. • Check that moving parts operate normally after assembly.

Use the following information as a guide for effective and quality service. • Parts are shown and detailed in an exploded diagram and are listed in the component list (see a in the following figure for an example page). • The component list consists of part names and quantities, as well as bolt and screw dimensions (see b in the following figure). • Symbols are used to indicate important aspects of a procedure, such as the grade of lubricant and the lubrication points (see c in the following figure). • Tightening torque specifications are provided in the exploded diagrams (see d in the following fig- ure), and in the related detailed instructions. Some torque specifications are listed in stages as torque figures or angles in degrees. • Separate procedures and illustrations are used to explain the details of removal, checking, and installation where necessary (see e in the following figure for an example page). For multi-engine applications, attaching an ALL engine start/stop button allows the operator to start all outboard motors. Unlike existing Digital Electronic Controls, the neutral position of the control lever is detected only by the LPS. This system is compatible with the Command Link Plus network so that it can be equipped with the Command Link Plus Multifunction Color Gauge. The new Digital Electronic Control is also compatible with Command Link network. However, the Command Link Plus network cannot be used with the Command Link network simultaneously. Switching the engine starter circuit will be required when using outboard motors compatible with existing Digital Electronic Controls in combination with a new Digital Electronic Control (except for single station models). The default setting is to use the engine starter circuit of outboard motors compatible with the new Digital Electronic Control.   • 28. 2-7 TECH FEA Technical feature and description Authorization system The Digital Electronic Control ECM has its authentication ID recognized by the engine ECM, and the Digital Electronic Control ECM verifies the engine ECM using the authentication ID when the system is activated. If the authentication ID does not match, the engine cannot be started. Reset the authentication ID on the engine ECM using YDIS Ver. 1.33 to allow the engine ECM to recognize the Digital Electronic Control ECM again. Once the engine ECM is reset, connect the Dig- ital Electronic Control ECM to the engine ECM, and the engine ECM will recognize the authentica- tion ID of the Digital Electronic Control ECM automatically, allowing the Digital Electronic Control ECM to take control of the engine operation. When the engine ECM and Digital Electronic Control ECM authentication ID do not match, neither the active indicator nor the alert indicator comes on. When the engine start switch or engine start/stop button is used to send an engine start and engine stop signal, the Digital Electronic Control ECM sends an engine start and stop signal to the engine ECM based on the engine start and stop status. The engine ECM starts or stops the engine, depending on its current state. When starting the engine using the ALL engine start/stop button, an engine start signal is sent to the engine ECM in order of PORT and STBD for twin engine installations, and to PORT, center and STBD in order for triple engine installations.   • 32. 2-11 TECH FEA Technical feature and description Shift-in prevention control in high-speed range When the control lever is moved quickly, for example, from the fully open F position a directly to the fully open R position while the engine speed is higher than the predetermined level (approximately 1500 r/min), the Digital Electronic Control ECM prevents gear shift until the engine speed is decreased to below the level for which the gear shift is enabled. Shifting to neutral starts once the control lever is moved beyond the gear shift enabling threshold b. The throttle valve is kept at fully closed position even after the control lever reaches notch point R. The actual gearshift is kept at N by the engine ECM until the engine speed reaches point c where the gearshift is enabled. Once the engine speed is decreased to 1500 r/min, gear shift operation to R starts at point c. After gear shift position d, the throttle opening is controlled to the position corresponding to the Digital Electronic Control lever position. A similar control process occurs when the control lever is moved quickly directly from the fully open R position to the fully open F position. When the relative positioning of the control levers for the twin type stays within the synchronizing control range for the specified period, the engine speed of the STBD outboard motor is synchronized with that of the PORT outboard motor. The same applies to the triple outboard motor installation. Under synchronizing control, the center outboard motor runs at the same speed as the PORT outboard motor. This function prevents the top cowling from striking the motor well on the boat when the outboard motor is fully tilted up. The tilt limit position set by this function ranges from the maximum tilt angle to approximately minus 4°–17°. Start all three outboard motor engines and then push the engine selec- tor switch a once. The P and S mode is entered. Pushing the engine selector switch a twice will change to the C mode. Then, operating mode will return to the initial condition (ALL mode) by push- ing the switch once more. The effective operating station can be changed when the main switch is ON, and all control levers at the main station and sub station are in the N position. Note that the effective operat- ing station cannot be changed for the outboard motors on which the main switch is OFF. The active indicator on the Digital Electronic Control box comes on, once the relevant operating station is acti- vated. In addition to information on outboard motors, it can also display boat information. The USB interface on the rear of the gauge can be used to input and output gauge settings, and to input image for display on the startup screen. When starting the Command Link Plus Multifunction Color Gauge for the first time, or when it is reset, configuring the number of outboard motors mounted on the boat will be required.   • 44. 2-23 TECH FEA Technical feature and description USB Interface Password-protected USB memory cannot be used. Used for connecting to USB memory (ver. 1.1, ver. 2.0) to install startup screens. Inputs and outputs the Command Link Plus Multifunction Color Gauge configuration information. Images and configuration information need to be saved on the top layer of the USB memory. Only single-byte Roman letters can be used for the file names of the image files to install. Anything in the file names of the configuration files cannot be changed except for the numbers. If characters other than numbers are changed, the Command Link Plus Multifunction Color Gauge will not be able to read the files. (Configuration_01.csv, Configuration_04.csv) The Command Link Plus Multifunction Color Gauge may not be turned off during installation of images or configuration files. Reinstallation of the images will be required if they do not display properly after installation. Startup screen Displays designated images (boat-builder logos and so on) on the startup screen. Images for display are installed directly via the USB interface. When the shift is in the N position, the lettering in the tachometer display (the color of the needles for analog displays) turns a paler color. • Digital displays Displays the engine speed in 100 r/min (“1” 100 r/min) increments. Displays “0” for engine speeds of less than 300 r/min. Display “99” flashes for engine speeds of more than 10000 r/min. Displays “– –” when no data on engine speed is being received. • Analog displays Displays the engine speed per minute in 1 r/min increments. Indicates “0” for engine speeds of less than 300 r/min. The indicator needle flashes in the 7000 position when engine speed is more than 7000 r/min. No needle is displayed when there is no data on engine speed being received. Trim meter display Displays the trim angle of the outboard motor in 10 stages. The display flashes when the trim angle is outside the trim range. Shift position display Displays the shift positions (F-N-R). The letter of the currently selected shift position is enlarged. No shift position is displayed when there is no data on shift position being received. Cooling water temperature display Either analog or digital display can be selected. • Digital displays Displays engine cooling water temperature in 5 stages. In normal operating conditions, the display is in the center of the meter. No cursor is displayed when there is no data on cooling water tempera- ture being received. • Analog displays The engine cooling water temperature is displayed in increments of 0.1 ºC. No needle is displayed when there is no data on cooling water temperature being received. Battery voltage display Either analog or digital (bar graphs and numeric displays) display can be selected. • Digital displays Battery voltage for starting the engine is displayed in either 5 stages or 0.1 V increments. For numeric displays, the display flashes when battery voltage is less than 12 V or greater than 16 V. No cursor, or alternatively, “– –. – V” is displayed when no data on battery voltage is being received. • Analog displays Battery voltage for starting the engine is displayed in 0.01 V increments. The needles indicate 11 when battery voltage for starting the engine is less than 11 V. The needles indicate 17 when battery voltage for starting the engine is greater than 17 V. No needle is displayed when there is no data on battery voltage being received.
