                                       The story of The Enormous Turnip
                                        A man has a seed. He goes in the garden. He puts the seed in the ground.
                                        The seed grows. It’s a turnip. The turnip’s big. It’s very, very big.
                                        It’s enormous.
                                        The man is hungry. He wants to eat the turnip. He pulls the turnip but it
                                        doesn’t move.
                                        The man sees a woman. ‘Come and help!’ he says. The woman pulls the
                                        man. The man pulls the turnip. The turnip doesn’t move.
                                        They see a boy. ‘Come and help!’ they say. The boy pulls the woman. The
                                        woman pulls the man. The man pulls the turnip. The turnip doesn’t move.
                                        They see a girl. ‘Come and help!’ they say. The girl pulls the boy. The boy
                                        pulls the woman. The woman pulls the man. The man pulls the turnip.
                                        The turnip doesn’t move.
                                        They see a dog. ‘Come and help!’ they say. The dog pulls the girl. The girl
                                        pulls the boy. The boy pulls the woman. The woman pulls the man. The
man pulls the turnip. The turnip doesn’t move.
They see a cat. ‘Come and help!’ they say. The cat pulls the dog. The dog pulls the girl. The girl pulls the boy.
The boy pulls the woman. The woman pulls the man. The man pulls the turnip. The turnip doesn’t move.
They see a mouse. ‘Come and help!’ they say. The mouse pulls the cat. The cat pulls the dog. The dog pulls the
girl. The girl pulls the boy. The boy pulls the woman. The woman pulls the man. The man pulls the turnip.
They pull and they pull and . . . the turnip moves.
They eat the enormous turnip. It’s good. They’re happy.

          This is the man.                                  Man       Look! Look at the seed!
Man       Hello.                                            Woman     (She laughs.) It’s not a seed. It’s a turnip!
Chorus    This is the woman.                                Man       Yes, it’s a turnip. It’s a very big turnip.
Woman     Hello.                                            Woman     It’s a very, very big turnip.
Chorus    This is the boy.                                            It’s enormous!
Boy       Hi!                                               Man       I’m hungry. I want to eat the turnip.
Chorus    This is the girl.                                 Turnip    Oh, no!
Girl      Hi!                                               Woman     Pull the turnip. (She goes out.)
Chorus    This is the dog.                                  Chorus    The man pulls the turnip.
Dog       Woof! Woof!                                                 The turnip doesn’t move.
Chorus    This is the cat.
Cat       Miao! Miao!                                                            SCENE 4
Chorus    This is the mouse.
Mouse     Squeak! Squeak!                                              THE WOMAN HELPS
Chorus    And this is the turnip.                           Chorus     The man pulls the turnip.
Turnip    Hello! I’m a seed. I’m small but I grow                      He pulls and he pulls and he pulls.
          very, very big.                                              The turnip doesn’t move.
                                                            The woman comes in.
                                                            Man        Come and help!
                     SCENE 2
                                                            Woman All right.
           LET’S PLANT A SEED                               She stands behind the man.
Chorus     The man and the woman are in the                 Man        One, two, three. Pull!
           garden.                                          Chorus The woman pulls the man.
Man        I’ve got a seed. Look!                                      The man pulls the turnip.
Woman It’s a big seed. What is it?                                     The turnip doesn’t move.
Man        I don’t know.
Woman Put it in the ground.                                                      SCENE 5
Man        All right.
He puts the seed in the ground.                                           THE BOY HELPS
Woman And give it some water.                               Man and Woman Hello!
Man        Have some water!                                 Boy        Hi! What’s that?
He gives the seed some water.                               Woman It’s a turnip. Come and help!
Seed       Oh, what’s that? Mm, water!                      Boy        Yes, all right.
           I like water. Thank you.                         He stands behind the woman.
The seed drinks and grows.                                  Woman One, two, three. Pull!
Man        I’m hungry.                                      Chorus The boy pulls the woman.
Woman Let’s go and eat.                                                The woman pulls the man.
The man and the woman go out.                                          The man pulls the turnip.
Chorus The seed grows. It grows and grows.                             The turnip doesn’t move.
           It’s enormous.

The dog stands behind the girl.
                                                         LET’S EAT THE TURNIP
Girl       One, two, three. Pull!
                                                Chorus     This is the kitchen. The boy and the girl
Chorus The dog pulls the girl.
                                                           are eating the turnip.
           The girl pulls the boy.
                                                Boy        Mm, it’s good.
           The boy pulls the woman.
                                                Girl       Mm, it’s very good.
           The woman pulls the man.
                                                The woman calls the man.
           The man pulls the turnip.
                                                Woman Come and eat! It’s good.
           The turnip doesn’t move.
                                                The man comes in from the garden.
                                                Man        All right! All right!
                     SCENE 8                    He sits down and the woman gives him some turnip.
               THE CAT HELPS                    The dog and the cat come in.
Man, Woman, Boy and Girl Hello!                 Cat and Dog Please can we eat the turnip?
Dog        Woof! Woof!                          Woman Yes, of course. Here you are. And thank
Cat        Miao! What’s that?                              you for your help.
Dog        It’s a turnip. Come and help!        She gives the cat and the dog some turnip.
Cat        Yes, all right. Miao! Miao!          The mouse comes in.
The cat stands behind the dog.                  Mouse      Can I eat the turnip too?
Dog        One, two, three. Pull!               Woman Yes, of course. Thank you, mouse.
Chorus The cat pulls the dog.                              Thank you very much, mouse.
           The dog pulls the girl.              The woman gives the mouse some turnip.
           The girl pulls the boy.              Man        Yes, it’s very good. Well done everyone!
           The boy pulls the woman.             Dog        Woof! Woof!
           The woman pulls the man.             Cat        Purr! Purr! Purr!
           The man pulls the turnip.            Mouse      I’m a small mouse. But I can help.
           The turnip doesn’t move.                        SQUEAK! SQUEAK!
