Tires & Rims

Remove Tires & Rims
1. Lift the tire of the floor with a cable and hoist. Put tooling (A) and wooden blocks in position as
shown under the axle housing.

2. Remove mounting nuts (2) from wheel assembly. Remove the tire and rim (1). The weight of
the tire and rim assembly is 640 lb (290 kg).
Install Tires & Rims
1. Put the tire and rim in position on the wheel studs with a cable and hoist.
2. Install stud nuts and tighten to a torque of 350 ± 35 lb ft (475 ± 45 Nm).
3. Lift the tire high enough to remove the wooden blocks and tooling (A) from under vehicle.

Wheels & Wheel Spindles

Remove Wheel & Wheel Spindles
Start By:
a. remove tires and rims
b. remove final drives
1. Remove four bolts (1) and lock nut (2) from hub assembly (3).

2. Use tool (A) to remove nut from spindle. Install tooling (B) on wheel assembly (4) and remove
gear assembly (5) from wheel assembly.
3. Remove retaining ring (6) from hub assembly (7) and remove ring gear (8).
4. Remove roller cone bearing (9) if necessary from hub assembly (3) with tooling (D).
5. Remove wheel assembly from spindle.
6. Remove bearing cup (10) from wheel assembly with tooling (C).

7. Remove duo-cone cone seal (11) from wheel housing. Remove bearing cup (12) from housing
with tooling (C).
8. Remove bearing cone (13) cup and duo-cone seal (14) from spindle. Remove spindle bolts (15)
and spindle (16) from axle housing.
9. Remove O-ring seal (17) from spindle.
Install Wheels & Wheel Spindles

1. Inspect O-ring seal for damage and make a replacement if necessary. Install seal (1) on spindle.
2. Put spindle (2) in place with oil holes in the vertical position and install the bolts to fasten it to
the axle housing. Tighten bolts to a torque of 220 ± 25 lb ft (300 ± 34 N·m)
3. Install bearing cone (3) in position on spindle.
4. Install the Duo-Cone seal in the wheel with tool (A).
NOTE: The rubber seals and all surfaces that make contact with the seals must be clean and dry.
After installation of the seals, put SAE 30 oil on the contact surfaces of the metal seals.
5. Install bearing cup in wheel assembly (4) with tooling (B).

6. Turn the wheel assembly over and install the Duo-Cone seal with tool (A).
7. Install tool (D) on the wheel assembly (4) and put it in position on the wheel spindle. Inspect O-
ring seal and make a replacement if necessary. Install seal (5).
8. Install bushing in hub (6) with tooling (C).
9. Install bearing cone (7) on hub assembly.

10. Install retaining ring (8) on back side of gear (9) to lock hub assembly (10) and gear together.
11. Install gear assembly (11) in position in the wheel assembly (11) in position in the wheel
assembly and on the spindle.
12. Install nut loosely on spindle with tool (E).
13. Install nut (12) from the rim and tire on wheel stud as show.

14. To preload wheel bearings tighten nut (13) against hub with tool (E) while the wheel is turned
to put bearings in correct position. Check the wheel rotating torque with a 9S7354 Torque
Wrench. The turning torque must be 76 ± 27 lb in. (8.6 ± 3.0 N·m) from the wheel stud. Turn nut
(13) to the next bolt hole and install bolts (14).

Axles

Remove & Install Axles
1. Remove plug (1) to drain oil from differential carrier.
2. Remove bolts (2) and cover assembly (3) from carrier.
3. Remove O-ring seal (4) from cover.

4. Remove axle shaft assembly (5) from housing.
5. Remove ring (8) from shaft with tool (A)
6. Remove gear (7) and washer (6) from shaft.
NOTE: Inspect O-ring seals for damage and make a replacement if necessary. Install O-ring seal
in cover.
NOTE: If the cover does not fit up against the final drive without force, remove the cover and
turn the flat sides of the three shafts as shown to give clearance for counterbore in cover.
NOTE: Install in the reverse order.

Front Wheel Brake

Remove & Install Wheel Brakes
Start By
a. remove tire and rim
1. Lift machine and install tooling (A).
2. Remove two bolts (1), and bolts (2) and cover (3).
3. Install tool (B) and hoist on caliper (4).

4. Disconnect brake line (5). Remove bolts (6), spacers and caliper from vehicle. Weight of caliper
is 95 lb (43 kg).
NOTE: The following notes should be taken when installing.
NOTE: Put 2P2506 Anti-Seize Compound on bolts and the face of spacers and install in position
to hold the caliper to the spindle. Tighten bolts to a torque of 120 ± 30 lb ft (160 ± 40 N·m).
Tighten bolt an additional 1/2 turn.
NOTE: Remove (bleed) the air from the brake system. See System Operation Testing And
Adjusting Manual.
NOTE: The clearance between pin (7) and the brake disc must not be less than .010 in. (0.25
mm). If the clearance is less than .010 in. (0.25 mm), turn bolt (8) counterclockwise one turn.
Slide pin (7) to get .010 in. (0.25 mm) clearance and tighten bolt (8) to a torque of 33 ± 5 lb ft (45
± 7 N·m).
Disassemble Wheel Brake Assembly
Start By:
a. remove brake head assemblies

1. Remove four bolts (3) from the brake head assemblies.
2. Remove two pins (1) and brake carrier (2) from the brake head assembly.
3. Install tooling (A) on the brake head and the brake carrier (plate side) as shown.
4. Install block (4) so the maximum travel distance between block (4) and pistons (5) is not more
than 35 mm (1.378 in)
5. Put air free of water under a pressure of 690 to 1030 kPa (100 to 150 psi) into the brake head
assembly to make force to move out pistons (5).
6. Remove the block tooling (A), the pins and brake carrier from the brake head assembly.
7. Remove pistons (5) from the brake head.

8. Remove bolts, (6) and plate (7) from the brake head.
9. Remove plugs (8) from the brake head.
10. Remove seals (9) from the brake head.
11. Remove pistons (10) from the brake head.
12. Remove boots (11) and seals (12) from both sides of the brake head.
Assemble Wheel Brake Assemblies

1. Install seals (1) in the brake head.
2. Install boots (2) in the brake head.
3. Put pistons (3) into position in the brake head.
4. Install seals (4) (plate side) in the brake head as shown.

5. Install plugs (5) in the brake head as shown.
6. Install plate (6) on the brake head.
7. Put brake carriers (7) into position in the brake head. Install pins (9) that hold the carriers in
place.
8. Install bolts (8) that hold the pins in place. Tighten the bolts to a torque of 45 ± 7 N·m (33 ± 5
lb ft).

Final Drives

Remove & Install Final Drives
Start By:
a. remove drive axles
1. Install tooling (A) and a hoist to the final drive carrier.
2. Install two 1/2 "-13 NC forcing screws in carrier. Remove mounting bolts (1) and final drive
(2) from wheel. The weight of the final drive is 75 lb (34 kg).
3. The following steps are for the installation of the final drive.
4. Install tooling (A) and a hoist on the final drive carrier.
5. Put the final drive in the wheel assembly and install mounting bolts. Tighten bolts to a torque of
190 ± 18 lb ft (260 ± 24 N·m)

Disassemble Final Drives
Start By:
a. remove final drives
1. Remove pin (1) using punch and a hammer and remove gear (2) and two washers (3) from the
carrier.
2. Remove bearing from gear.
3. Remove shaft (1), gear (2), two washers (3) (one on top and bottom) and bearing (4).
Assemble Final Drive

1. Install bearing (4) in gear (2).
2. Put gears (2) into positions in the carrier of the final drive. Install one steel washer and one
bronze washer on both sides of each gear.
NOTE: Install the steel washer against the gear and the bronze washer against the carrier of the
final drive.
3. Install pin (1) with the part that is cut away to the outside.

Front Differential

Remove Front Differential
Start By:
a. remove front axles
b. remove supplemental steering pump drive group (if equipped) *

This operation is in the Vehicle Systems Disassembly and Assembly Section.
1. Drain oil from the front axle housing.
2. Remove twenty-four bolts and cover.
3. Remove four bolts (1), two straps (2) and the front differential drive shaft (3).

4. Disconnect tube assembly (4) from tee assembly. Remove bolt (5) (hidden) and spacer that
fastens tee to axle housing.
5. Remove plates (6) and brake line tube assemblies (7) as a unit from each side of axle housing.

6. Install two 1/2 "-13 NC forcing screws (8) in the carrier assembly. Install tooling (A) in
position on differential as shown.
7. Remove mounting bolts and differential assembly from housing. Weight of the differential is
190 lb (86 kg).
