North Korea Human Rights Violations - Kim Jong-Un Is No Different by
Jiawen Yang
in Business (submitted 2013-06-12)
North Korea has been an isolated country almost ever since its
formation. The country's first president Kim II Sung initiated the Juche philosophy of self reliance which replaced
Marxism-Leninism as the official state ideology in 1972. His son Kim Jong-il introduced the concept of Songun or
military first policy to strengthen the nation and the government. North Korea is the most heavily militarized country
and has the fourth largest active army in the world.
After the death of supreme leader Kim Jong-il, his third youngest son Kim Jong-un was announced the "Great
Successor" and was accorded the title of supreme leader. He is the world's youngest head of state at the age of
29-30(Exact date of birth unknown). But his succession as state head has not improved the human rights of
citizens.
North Korea remains the most reclusive and closed country of world as it is a police state and headed by a family
dynasty. The state controls everything. Citizens do not have access to basic rights like that of education, good
healthcare and others. Outsiders are not welcome and are subjected to intense monitoring during their stay. Human
rights violations have been reported by international organization, only to be played down by the State.
Human rights violations have continued over the years and even the rise of a young leader like Kim Jong-un has not
changed anything in this regards. In fact, Kim Jong-un is believed to have continued his father's practice of sending
people to political prison camps, execution of defectors and the practice of public execution. As many as 16 prison
camps as large as cities have been reported to exist in the country, which are characterized by inhuman conditions
and torture.
North Korea ranks 2nd from last in Worlds Press Freedom Index and media is strictly controlled by government. The
media is used by government to propagate it agenda and promotion of its dynasty. It is also not possible for people
to view broadcast of channels from across the borders. Without a free fourth estate, human rights entitlement can't
be ensured.
North Korean has been severely criticized by international organizations like United Nations, and Amnesty
International on grounds of human rights violations. UN has also passed resolutions to end grave violations of human
rights but North Korea rejected such resolutions saying they are politically motivated. A 3 member panel has been
set up by the UN to investigate into human rights violations in North Korea. But considering the notorious nature of
North Korea it is highly unlikely that they will have access to investigation.
Every human on this planet is entitled to live life with dignity and is entitled to some basic human rights. These
rights should not be violated and one can only hope for a change in North Korea's stand on this issue.
