He discussed the motivations, expected benefits, and how they implemented Linux desktops at their company. - Some of the benefits expected included cost savings, a single system image, and relying on public domain software. They contributed to various open source projects to help with their implementation. - They found that things like OpenOffice, hardware support, and virus protection worked well. Issues included some application incompatibilities and needing to test hardware first. - Overall, the implementation was successful. They saw cost savings, stability, and fewer issues compared to Windows. Employees had a positive experience and the company no longer wanted to use

The last few DockerCon events have covered the introduction of multi-platform image capabilities into the Docker registry and engine releases. Now it's time to put these features to good use building applications across architectures and running them all in a heterogeneous Docker Swarm! There are literally tens of thousands of images available today in the public DockerHub repository. These images cover almost every possible distro and common open source tool, server, or application that exists today. But there has been one drawback--all of these images assume you are on the most commonly used platform: 64-bit Intel Linux. In late 2015 and 2016 the Docker development community and Docker distribution team have enabled a new registry image specification that supports packaging multiple architecture and OS layer images within the same repository name and tag. This allows a common image, say "mysql:latest", to contain references to images for all supported OS and architectures that the packager determines to make available. Now a `docker run` or `docker pull` of "mysql:latest" will work seamlessly across all supported architectures. In this talk we will demonstrate the packaging and running of a multi-architecture containerized application on several different supported Docker platforms like ARM, POWER, and System z.

Tracing the root cause of a performance issue requires a lot of patience, experience, and focus. It’s so hard that we sometimes attempt to guess by trying out tentative fixes, but that usually results in frustration, messy code, and a considerable waste of time and money. This talk explains how to correctly zoom in on a performance bottleneck using three levels of profiling: distributed tracing, metrics, and method profiling. After we learn to read the JVM profiler output as a flame graph, we explore a series of bottlenecks typical for backend systems, like connection/thread pool starvation, invisible aspects, blocking code, hot CPU methods, lock contention, and Virtual Thread pinning, and we learn to trace them even if they occur in library code you are not familiar with.
