1. The Prison Industrial Complex
The beginning:
• The PIC is a term brought up by activist with a vision to abolish
prisons
• Abolitionist activist Angela Davis created the term by making it in
the title of her 1997 recorded speech
Components:
• A Powerful System of surveillance, policing and imprisonment created
through the mass incarceration
• Sustains power through false stereotypes and legislatives “tough on
crime”
• Only those who have racial and economic privileges are advancing from
the PIC because those who are part of the normativity are not being
labeled as deviant.

• A black male born today in the U.S. has a 28.5 % chance of
being incarcerated in his lifetime compared to a white male born
today in the U.S. has a 4.4% chance of being incarcerated in his
lifetime
