Domestic Violence
Violence in the home, often
perpetrated by a person in a
position of trust or authority
over the child.
Homelessness
Lacking permanent housing,
putting children in unstable
living situations with high risk of
abuse.
Poverty and Child Labor
Poverty often leads to
exploitation of children for
work, placing them in high-risk
situations.

Child Welfare Services
Organizations that
advocate for the protection
and well-being of children
who have experienced
abuse, providing support,

Responsibility lies on the
police to investigate and
ensure the safety of the
child, and to prosecute

as well as to provide

6. Relevant Policies
Foster Care and Adoption Many states have policies that prioritize
relative placements, prioritize and expedite
adoptions, and require diligent efforts to
finalize adoptions within timely manner.
Child Abuse Reporting Most states require certain professions to
report child abuse (doctors, teachers, social
workers, etc.). There are oftenpenalties in
place for failure to report and immunity for
those who do report in good faith.
Child Support Guidelines Many states have implemented policies to help
support the needs of abused and neglected
children, including guidelines on financial
assistance for foster care and adoption
parents.

8. Conclusion
Protecting children from abuse is an ongoing effort that requires
collaboration from all facets of society. Trauma-informed care and
evidence-based practices are necessary for the management and
prevention of abuse, as are policies and mandates that put the welfare of
the child first.
