Come join us for a reading from Franz Kafka’s short story “Tha Metamorphosis”.
The tale takes place in the twenties and follows a man named Gregor Samsa who awakes one
morning to find that he has been inexplicably transformed into a giant insect. His parents and his
sister Grete try to rouse him so he can make it to his dreary jaob as a traveling salesman. The family
depends on him for its livelihood. Before long, however, economic reality sets in and requires all
three to find work. The role reversal soon proves to be too much for the entire family to handle and
resentment soon takes the place of love and compassion for Gregor. This story is a reflection of the
economical burden that can occur in human relationships.
