2. “To know where we are going,
it is important to know where have come from
and
equally important, if not more,
to know where we are ”

4. Today : SureSmile
• The precision wire-bending capability of
robots, combined with digital 3-D led
scanning of teeth, computer simulation and
high-tech wire material brings in the next
generation of smile reshaping.
• It's a revolutionary, end-to-end orthodontic
treatment process called SureSmile by
OraMetrix, a process that shortens
treatment time while providing high quality
results and greater accuracy.

… then where are we exactly going ?

8. Craniofacial Imaging in
Orthodontics
• 2D – Outdated
• 3D – Current but costly and radiation exposure risk
• Digital processes are currently being developed to
create accurate multidimensional models, from 2D
images that integrate form and function.
• These models will be interactive, linked to
knowledge databases, and will provide the clinician
with answers to pertinent questions.

9. CAD / CAM
Imaging is a way to look at the patient in as many
different ways as possible. You can modify the image
to test out treatment ideas before you actually deliver
the treatment.
For example, instead of putting on brackets and
seeing what happens, imaging technology may give
us a more direct route to our end, by allowing us to,
as Holdaway said, “Treat with the end in mind.”
• Processing Software
• Virtual 3-D All View models
• Mechanized movable models / Cut away models
• Holographic Models

10. Growth Genetics
• Gene modification can be done in high risk
individuals to ensure that there is no possibility of
jaw discrepancies.
• Role of orthodontist might get limited to identification
of high risk people which would be based on
calculations of presence and absence of certain
genes and factors.
• So that the next generation will have better chances
of having proportionate jaws.
• Insertion of growth factors in the area of growth
deficiency is being tested as a technique to ensure
sufficient growth.

11. Self Adjusting Bracket-Wire
System
• Brackets with two way hinges to adjust the tip and
torque values in an adjusting machine.
• Bracket positioning determined by the computer
according to the 3D scan impression.
• Expression of tip and torque controlled by the
bracket itself.
• A single bracket system used for all the patients
with exactly the same requirements incorporated in
it as a particular patient will need. In short, a patient
specific CAD-Cam bracket technology.
• A single rectangular wire used for all purposes, a
wire which will be as flexible as NiTi for the initial
period but will become rigid as stainless steel as
time progresses.

12. Orthodontic Nano-Robots
• ‘Orthodontic Nanobots’ working on acoustic data
signals could directly manipulate the periodontal
tissues, including gingivae, periodontal ligament,
cementum and alveolar bone, allowing rapid and
painless tooth straightening, rotating and vertical
repositioning within minutes to hours.
• With the ongoing research in nanotechnology we
will soon have brackets incorporated with nano
chips which will take the specific appliance
prescription from the computer and with help of
miniature robotic systems it will adjust the tip and
torque values accordingly.

13. Ultrasound as Orthodontic Aid
• Low-Intensity Pulsed UltraSound (LIPUS)
• Mechanical injury from wearing orthodontic braces
causes progressive root resorption, limiting the
duration that braces can be worn. This new device
will work to counteract the destructive resorptive
process while allowing for the continued wearing
of corrective braces.
• It has been shown that LIPUS can improve jaw
growth in cases with hemifacial microsomia.

14. OrthoAccel Technologies
• OrthoAccel Technologies, Inc.
University of Illinois - Chicago
OrthoAccel Technologies, Inc. uses a patented
technology of applying cyclic-forces to develop
devices, which will dramatically expedite orthodontic
treatment time.
By reducing patient chair time, OrthoAccel will offer
a financial benefit to its customers, and
orthodontists who can treat more patients each
year.
