Editor's Notes

  1. As far as my home town goes, I guess I would have to put it as Oceanside, Ca. It’s where I’m currently stationed. I spent half my life growing up in San Jose, Ca, and the other half in Hollister, Ca. I lived in Temecula, Ca briefly before I joined the Marine Corps so that could hardly be labeled as a hometown. I’ve spent the majority of the past 3 years in this area while I’ve been going through all my training and serving my 5 year term.
  2. I’m not much of a traveler, but I have been to Alaska, Maryland, and Nebraska briefly usually to see friends and family. I went to Costa Rica for a class trip while I was in high school Biology, and Afghanistan currently for my deployment. The most in depth, insightful, and pleasurable trip was to Costa Rica because of the nature of the trip. We went there to study the different systems of life by wandering through the forests and zip lining across the tree tops. Future travel hopefully includes Ireland, Russia, some part of Asia.
  3. My heritage is Scottish, Irish, and German. My mother was adopted by my grandfather who is Mexican so I can get away with telling people I am quarter Mexican. That usually throws people off because I look like the traditional Irishman. People don’t usually see too many people of Mexican heritage that happen to be a stereotypical “Ginger.” My grandparents come from the “Thurber” line, which is Scottish, I believe. I’m currently working on tracing my family history back as a side project for no real reason aside from my own personal interest. The Mexican side of my family lives mostly in the Baja part of Mexico, which is why I have made a lot of trips down there in the past. My grandfather likes to skip around to his different houses in La Paz, San Sebstian, and Loreto. My mothers blood relatives live in Missouri, and my fathers blood relatives live in Nebraska. Aside from that, a lot of information relating to my heritage has been lost to time.
  4. As far as my education goes, I’m a high school graduate (go figure) with focuses in French, and Spanish out of pleasure. I’m currently a network admin/ network specialist for the Marine Corps with certifications such as Network+, Security+, with Cisco and becoming a journeyman internetwork specialist in the works. I took French for three years and Spanish for 4, although I have forgotten a good amount of both. The Marine Corps has provided an opportunity to expand and become certified in the multifaceted job that is networking, which I have taken advantage of. I am currently enrolled in a Psychology class aside from this History class which I believe should be fairly interesting. My long term goal is to get my masters in Electrical Engineering. The Marine Corps is almost counterproductive, in a sense, with furthering education, because we have a very proprietary style of learning of which you would have to be in to understand. On top of the previous, the Marine Corps does not stress education outside of our occupational specialty, albeit they provide the opportunity which we are grateful for
  5. My job is “Data Network Specialist” for the Marine Corps. Aside from the things that Marines in general do, I mostly deal with servers, switches, computers, and unfortunately users. When we get to where ever we are going, it’s our job to set up the network for our “AO” (area of operation). Networks can get quite complex when our users need to be able to access classified information, be able to send information all over the country, and to be able to reliably store information and protect all of it from people that don’t need to see it. The picture on the top left is my job on a bad day, which sometimes includes crawling under the buildings we have and running cables. It has it’s perks though. Some of the perks include having the most reliable and accessible communication with the states, and getting to ride in one of the AF’s Apache helicopters on their test runs just because you get a lot of face time with the higher ups and they are easily amused (Don’t tell them I said that though). My job has proven to be a good stepping stone for a handful of different jobs in the civilian sector, and the best part about it is that they provide the education for free (excluding spending a year in Afghanistan without weekends, and pretty much being on call at any time of the day any day). All in all, I’ve been more satisfied than I thought I would be with this job.
  6. Some of my favorite things include: First and foremost, family and friends. Next is good music, good beer, the stock market on an uptrend, time off on vacation, penguins, sloths, and turtles. I’m a bit random with the whole animal thing, but for some reason they fall under favorites. Not pictured is my future German shepherd. Some more abstract favorites are tranquility, cohesiveness, and intellect.
