Engine Transfer Gear And Retarder

Disassemble Engine Transfer Gear And Retarder
preparatory step:
a) remove engine
1. Remove pumps:
Implement-weight 175 lbs. (79 kg).
Steering-weight 275 lbs. (125 kg)
Transfer gear scavenge pump.
2. Remove retarder control valve.

3. Attach hoist and remove transfer gear assembly using two 1/2"-13 NC forcing screws and a
5/8"-11 NC forged eyebolt.
4. Place transfer gear, input end down.
5. Remove two bearing cages (pump mounts) using 1/2"-13 NC forcing screws.
6. Remove output flange.
7. Remove output bearing retainer.
8. Remove gears (1), (2) and (3).
9. Remove bearings from pump drive gears using tool (A).

NOTE: Output gear bearings must be cut off if replacement is necessary.
10. Turn transfer gear over and remove input gear (4).
11. Separate retarder housing (5).
12. Remove rotor.
13. Remove remainder of retarder housing (6) using 3/8"-16NC forged eyebolts-weight 135 lbs.
(61 kg).
14. Remove input shaft (7) and gear. Bearings must be cut from gear if replacement is necessary.
15. Use tool (B) to remove input bearing cup.
16. Drive all other bearing cups out of housing using a soft punch.

Assemble Engine Transfer Gear And Retarder
1. Heat bearing cones in 275°F (135°C) oil and install on gears.
NOTE: Lubricate the bearing cones after they have cooled.
2. Install bearing cups in housing and retainer.
3. Install input gear shaft, and bearings in housing.

4. Install half of retarder housing with enough shims to produce measurable input shaft end play.
5. Using dial indicator, tool (A), measure end play, and add or remove shims to produce .005-.011
in. (0,13-0,28 mm) end play.
6. Tighten retarder to housing bolts to 90 ± 10 lb. ft. (12,5 ± 1,4 mkg).
7. Install retarder rotor.
8. Install the other half of retarder housing.
9. Install flywheel input gear. Turn transfer gear over.
10. Install oil tubes.
11. Install pump drive gears.
12. Install bearing retainers using enough shims to establish measurable end play. Measure end
play with dial indicator, tool (A).
13. Add or remove shims as required to produce .005-.011 in. (0,13-0,28 mm) end play.
14. Install output drive gear and adjust end play to .005-.011 in. (0,13-0,28 mm).

15. Connect transfer gear assembly to engine.
16. Install retarder control valve.
17. Install pumps.

a) install engine and transfer gear

Disassemble Transmission Transfer Gear

preparatory step:
a) remove transmission
1. Remove transfer gear from transmission.
2. Install forcing screws and remove drive gear bearing cage (1) and gear.
3. Remove bearing race from bearing cage with punch and hammer.
4. Remove bearing race from case using tool (A).

5. Remove bearing from drive gear using tool (B).
6. Remove oil screen and magnetic strainer.
7. Remove scavenge oil pump.
8. Install forcing screw and remove manifold assembly and oil pump.
9. Rotate oil pump drive gear. Align holes (2) in gear with bolts. Remove bolts (3).
10. Rotate gear to forcing screw holes. Install forcing screws and remove gear and bearings.
Remove gear through transmission drive gear hole.
11. Remove inner bearing race retaining ring and remove bearing and bearing cage (4).

12. Remove governor housing and governor.
13. Remove governor drive gear (6) and fiber washers (7).
14. Remove input gear bearing cage (5).
15. Remove bearing race from cage using tool (C).
16. Remove bearings from input gear using tool (D).
17. Remove idler shaft retaining bolts, install 3/8"-16 NC forcing screws and remove idler shaft.
18. Remove idler gear and bearings.

19. Drive race out of idler gear with punch and hammer. Do not drive against spacer (8).
20. Remove spacer and retaining ring, and drive second race and spacer out with tool (E).
21. Remove retaining ring.
Assemble Transmission Transfer Gear
1. Install retaining ring (3) into idler gear (2).
NOTE: Retaining ring IS NOT centered in gear bore.
2. Install spacer (4) from side with greatest length to retaining ring.

NOTE: Install spacer with shoulder through retaining ring.
3. Drive bearing races (1) and (5) into gear with tool (A).
4. Install gear and bearings into case.
5. Install shaft, O-ring, and retaining bolts.
6. Install input gear bearing races into case and cage using tool (B).
7. Heat input gear bearing to 275° F (135° C) and install on input gear.
8. Install input gear, bearing cage, shim pack, and O-ring into case. Tighten retaining bolts to 36 ±
2 lb. ft. (5,0 ± 0,3 mkg).
9. Measure bearing end play using tool (C).
10. Add or remove shims to obtain .006 ± .002 in. (0,15 ± 0,05 mm) end play.

11. Install bearing cage on oil pump drive gear.
12. Install outer race retaining ring on bearing.
13. Install bearing on gear.
14. Install inner race retaining ring.
15. Install gear assembly into case and tighten retaining bolts to 35 ± 2 lb. ft. (5,0 ± 0,3 mkg).
16. Heat drive gear bearings to 275° F (135° C) and install on gear.
17. Install drive gear bearing races into case and bearing cage.
18. Install drive gear (6), bearing cage, and shim pack. Tighten retaining bolts to 36 ± 2 lb. ft. (5,0
± 0,3 mkg).
NOTE: Install gear with spline end up.
19. Measure end play using tool (C).
20. Add or remove shims to obtain .006 ± .002 in. (0,15 ± 0,05 mm) bearing end play.

21. Install manifold assembly and oil pump (7).
22. Install scavenge oil pump (8).
23. Install screen and magnetic strainer (9).
24. Install governor assembly and housing (10).
25. Install assembled transfer gear on transmission.

Disassemble Transmission Governor
preparatory step:
a) disassemble transmission transfer gear
1. Remove drive gear (1), idler gear retaining bolt (3), idler gear (2), and their respective thrust
washers.
2. Remove O-ring seal from governor shaft and remove governor (4).
3. Note the A,B, and C letter designations on the governor valve bodies, and disassemble each
valve body individually.

4. From body A, remove retaining ring (8), stop (7), slug (6), and spool (5).
5. From body B, remove retaining ring (14), stop (13), retaining ring (12), spacer (11), slug (10),
and spool (9).
6. From body C, remove retaining ring (19), stop (18), ring (17), spacer (16), and spool (15).
Assemble Transmission Governor
1. Into body C, install spool, spacer, ring, stop, and retaining ring.
2. Into governor valve body marked B install spool, slug, spacer, ring, stop, and retaining ring.
3. Into body A, install spool, slug, stop, and retaining ring.
4. Place governor over shaft and install O-ring on shaft.
5. Install idler gear, drive gear, thrust washers, and retaining bolt.

Transmission

Remove Transmission
1. Turn tractor 90° to scraper.
2. Drain transmission.-20 U.S.Gal. (75 liter).
3. Disconnect lines (3) and linkage (1).
4. Remove cover (2), gear, and drive shaft (4).

5. Remove guard (6) from under hydraulic tank.
6. Disconnect and support or remove drive shaft tube (5).
7. Connect hoist and support transmission.
8. Remove transmission (do not remove differential mounting nuts) mounting nuts and remove
transmission-weight 3,500 lbs. (1,587 kg).
Install Transmission
1. Position transmission output shaft splines to align with differential.
2. Attach hoist and install transmission.

3. Connect drive shaft tube.
4. Install drive shaft (1), gear (2), and cover.
5. Install hydraulic tank guard.
6. Connect lines and linkage.
7. Fill transmission with lubricant.
8. Adjust transmission linkage. See TESTING AND ADJUSTING section.
Disassemble Transmission
preparatory step:
a) remove transmission
1. Remove transfer gear (1) using 1/2" - 13 NC forcing screws-weight 510 lbs. (231 kg).
2. Remove shift lever.
3. Remove control valve cover (2).
4. Remove shifting mechanism (4).

5. Remove manifold and tubes (3).
6. Loosen twelve-point bolts and remove semi-automatic shift control valve group as a unit.
7. Loosen remaining bolts and remove pressure control valve group (5).
8. Loosen remaining bolts and remove shift selector valve group (6).
9. Remove retarder oil line manifold.
10. Remove two sleeves to relief valve.
11. Remove oil filter base.
12. Remove one sleeve.
13. Remove relief valve group and manifold.
14. Remove governor drive shaft from transmission output shaft.

15. Place transmission, output end up, on repair stand.
16. Remove No. 7 clutch to case mounting bolts (7), install 1/2"-13 NC forcing screws, and loosen
clutches.
17. Install 1/2" forged eyebolts, attach hoist, and remove Nos. 3,4,5,6, and 7 clutches as a unit-
weight 1,075 lbs. (488 kg).
18. Remove No. 1 and 2 clutches and torque converter. Use 1/2"-13 NC forcing screws and 1/2"
forged eyebolts-weight 800 lbs. (363 kg).
19. Remove case from stand-weight 625 lbs. (284 kg).

20. With converter and No. 1 and 2 clutches in the horizontal position, remove retainer ring and
inner shaft (8).
21. Place converter and No. 1 and 2 clutches on stand, converter up.
22. Remove bearing retainer nuts (9). Attach hoist and remove converter-weight 300 lbs. (136 kg).
23. Attach hoist and remove No. 2 clutch from No. 1 clutch-weight 225 lbs. (102 kg).

Assemble Transmission
1. Place No. 1 clutch on transmission repair stand.

2. Install No. 2 clutch on No. 1 clutch.
3. Install torque converter and bearing retainer nuts.
4. Position torque converter and clutches horizontally and install inner shaft and retainer ring.
5. Place transmission case on repair stand, and install torque converter and No. 1 and 2 clutches in
case.
6. Install No. 3,4,5,6, and 7 clutches as a unit.
7. Remove transmission from stand and install governor drive shaft.
8. Install relief valve group (6) and manifold.
9. Install sleeve.
10. Install oil filter base.
11. Install two sleeves to relief valve.
12. Install retarder oil line manifold.

14. Install pressure control valve group.
15. Install semi-automatic shift control valve group.
16. Install manifold and tubes (3).
17. Install shifting mechanism (4).
18. Install control valve cover (2).
19. Install shift lever.
