Harvin's first job was in aerospace - in 1982, after graduation from high school, he spent the summer on the launch site of the world's first privately built rocket to reach outer space, the Conestoga 1. He continued to work for Space Services through his college years. Harvin graduated in 1986 with a BA from Northwestern University. He then worked for five years as a National Bank Examiner with the U.S. Treasury Department in New York, Washington D. C. and London, England. He earned an MBA in Finance from New York University in 1991. As part of his MBA degree program, Harvin studied at the London Business School in 1990.
