Editor's Notes

  1. Voice: Hello. Today Global Nutrition Empowerment, a group of American and Canadian mothers, Scientists and Doctors, would like to share with you information about nutrition. Eating quality food gives you energy to grow, work and learn. Do you know that good nutrition also makes you and your babies healthier and smarter? Slide 1
  2. Voice: Nepali mothers, scientists and doctors have joined with GNE to bring you vitamins and minerals to make you and your babies healthier. ((after a pause) Would you like to learn how to be healthier? Selection yes or no (check-green and X-no) If NO- voice over (2nd part of the conversation in the audio). If YES- go to next slide… (Pop up of two buttons for yes and no after above statement If select yes, then proceed to nutrition star next slide show If select no, then “I’m sorry to hear that. Please come back when you want to learn more.” slide show ends) Slide 2
  3. Voice: The most important time for the development of your baby is before you know you are pregnant. Your babies brain, heart and muscles form in the first 23 days after conception. YOU need to have all of the right vitamins and minerals available BEFORE you become pregnant, so that the baby you create will have the greatest chance to build the best brain, bones and immune system
  4. Voice: Vitamins and minerals come from nutritious food, but sometimes this is not enough. Young women often do not get enough essential vitamins and minerals in their diet. Spine deformities such as these may be prevented when young women take a supplement of folic acid BEFORE, as well as during pregnancy. Interactive question: have you seen any babies in your villages with these types of protrusions from their spine? Recorded answer: Yes/no? Regardless, go to the next slide
  5. Voice: These babies have some of their brain protruding from the skull. Young women can reduce the chance of this happening to their baby by getting all the right vitamins and minerals BEFORE they become pregnant. Interactive question: have you seen any babies in your villages with these types of protrusions from their brain? Recorded answer: Yes/no?
  6. Voice: Breast feeding for two years gives your baby the best start on life, but only if YOU are healthy and have enough vitamins, minerals and energy. Both you AND your baby need plenty of energy, protein, vitamins and minerals.
  7. Voice: What do we get from food? Are there ways you can be healthier by eating certain food? Slide 8
  8. Voice: Rice and cooking oil provide energy. And lots of it! Rice and cooking oil do not have many vitamins and minerals though. Slide 9
  9. Voice: Daal (lentil) is very nutritious and has lots of protein to build strong muscle and bones, as well as being a good source of vitamins and minerals – but rice and dhal is still not enough for a healthy body! Slide 10
  10. Voice: Vegetables and fruits are the best source of vitamins and minerals. You need 5 or more servings of fresh vegetables and fruits each day. But this is still not enough. Why? Even with a perfect diet there are places where the soil is lacking in certainly minerals, so plants won’t have enough nutrients in them. Scientists have learned there are some vitamins women and developing babies need to have in larger amounts than we usually eat. Interactive question: How many servings of fresh fruits or vegetables did you eat yesterday? 2 3 4 5 6 7 8 Slide 11
  11. Voice: Touch the number on the screen if you ate this food yesterday. 1. sagg, 2 cooking oil 3 cauliflower 4 onion 5 mango 6 carrot 7 dahl 8 rice, 9 potatoes 10 garlic Interactive: participant clicks on which foods they ate yesterday. Voice: Now we will find out why these foods are important for women and growing babies. How can YOU get enough vitamins and minerals. Remember, healthy mother’s make healthy babies. Note: record the response Slide 13
  12. Voice: Healthy food is only one part of getting enough nutrients to create a healthy baby. To make certain that you and your baby get all the required vitamins and minerals needed you must take one vitamin/mineral pill a day. Even western women take pre-natal vitamin mineral pills to stay healthy and strong. Let’s learn about some of the different vitamins and minerals in your food and in this pill! Slide 14 #Since it is a pill in a bottle, does not mean that it is medicine, let us discuss what this pill contains and how it will help you, and lets find out how you will not be dependent on this pill for all your future health and nutrition. (change this- but make it sound something like this..)
  13. Voice: Vitamin A is found in many fruits and vegetables, especially ones that are orange. Vitamin A is important for your eyes to function well. Your baby is better able to fight infections if they have enough Vitamin A. Your baby gets vitamin A and other nutrients from you when they are in your womb and from breast milk. Slide 15
  14. Voice: Iron is important for women. Many women in Nepal need more iron in their diet. Lentils, goat meat, nuts, beans, spinach and other leafy greens are good sources of iron. Pregnant women need a lot of iron to build up their blood. Your baby needs iron for brain and blood development too! You can improve your iron stores by eating these foods, being dewormed regularly and taking a vitamin/mineral supplement. Slide 16
  15. Voice: Calciums build strong bones, teeth and help fight infections. You and your baby get calcium from milk and fish. When you are pregnant and breast feeding you should drink 4 cups of milk every day. Slide 17
  16. Voice: Iodine is critical for a baby’s brain growth and prevents goiter in adults. Iodized salt used daily provides enough iodine. Slide 18
  17. Voice: Folate is one of the most important vitamins for you and your baby. For optimal development of your babies brain and spine you need to eat one kg of saag EVERYDAY. This is why it is important for you to take one vitamin mineral pill EVERYDAY before and during pregnancy. Doctors around the world recommend that any woman who might become pregnant should take one vitamin mineral supplement containing folic acid EVERY DAY. The vitamin mineral supplement you receive today contains all the nutrients we just talked about. Slide 19
  18. Voice: traditional Nepali meals with fresh fruits and vegetables are healthy food. Do you know that cooking vegetables more than 5 minutes destroys some vitamins? Slide 22 (consistent with the previous)
  19. Answer slide for previous interactive question Slide 21 (green check)
  20. These foods are not healthy and should not be eaten often Voice: These snack foods taste good BUT have no nutritional value. Question: How many times a week do you eat one of these snacks? 1 2 3 4 5 6 more Slide 23
  21. Smoking cigarettes and drinking alcohol is not safe for your fetus and baby Slide 24 Smoking Cigarettes and Drinking Alcohol is not safe for your fetus and baby
  22. Voice: So, one Prenatal vitamin mineral supplement taken daily provides vitamins and minerals for young women and mothers. This is not medicine. It has the same vitamins and minerals that are in this food picture. It is important to eat a healthy diet as there is energy in food that is NOT in the supplement, but the supplement will insure you and your baby get enough critical nutrients. Slide 24
  23. Sometimes, this supplement may give you an upset stomach. You can reduce this by taking the supplement with some food. Do not take the supplement if it makes you vomit. Slide 25
  24. Voice: Where is a good place to store your vitamin bottle? Please touch the yellow area that you think is a good place to store your vitamin bottle. Choice: Allow participant to select yellow circle and star. They have to select ONLY the star to move on. Slide 27 (participant has to touch the star to move ahead)
  25. Voice: these vitamins have been made especially for women old enough to have children. Do not give these vitamins to men or children. These vitamins have been made for women old enough to have children Slide 28
  26. Voice: Touch which people should take these mineral vitamin supplements. Interactive: allow each picture to be touched. A star appears when they touch the correct choice and voice says “you are a nutrition star” If participant touch small boy, then voice over, “No. Not for children” If participant touch small girl, then voice over, “No. Not for children” If participant touch man, then voice over, “No. Not for men” If participant touch old woman, then voice over, “No. This lady is too old to have children” If choice is woman: yes, you are right- this vitamin is not for young children, men or old women who are not of child bearing age… Slide 29
  27. Voice: Why should you eat a nutritious diet and take a vitamin Mineral Supplement every day? I will be healthier My baby will be born healthier and smarter My baby will get better nutrition from my milk (check on the sentence and a check comes up)
  28. Besides the nutritious food and vitamins, you should also practice good hygiene. Why? Every year hundreds of thousand babies die because of lack of proper hygiene and sanitation. Besides giving birth to healthy babies, mothers should also care about proper sanitation and hygiene.
  29. What should we do for proper sanitation? Drink clean water. Always use a toilet. Wash your hands with soap. Keep the kitchen clean, cover your food, keep the water clean. Manage waste, keep your house and surroundings clean
  30. Voice: Congratulations! Today you have learnt about nutrition. Slide 34
