D2 Problem
Problem Statement:
Investigate the removal of the MLG
Fixed Leg Fairing Door requirement for
NTM 57-51-60/201 and the ALI above.
Problem Description:
SFO Maintenance is required to
remove the MLG fixed leg fairing
(strut) doors when accomplishing
EQ3674 and EQ3676 for AD 2005-02-
09. These EQs point to ALI Task
575160-01-1 as well as the AMM
referenced above. In the ALI and NTM
documents (see above), they state
that the MLG fixed leg fairing doors
(Zones 732/742) must be removed in
order to perform the X-ray to the
lower wing skin just above the MLG.
However, SFOIQ has conducted R&D
to prove that the doors can stay on
and will not interfere with the X-ray
test results. SFO has requested
INDEG to ask Airbus to remove this
requirement from the ALI and NTM as
well as the EMACs and job cards need
to be revised by United.

D4 Reason(s)/Root Cause(s):
In AMM Task 57-51-00-200-008, there is no callout to remove the MLG fixed leg
fairings/cylinder doors (Zones 732/742). In fact, the AMM Task calls out to remove
the applicable secondary hinged fairing only per AMM Task 32-12-13-000-001.
However under Subtask 57-51-00-260-050 under the original AMM Task 57-51-00-
200-008, there are instructions to do a special detailed inspection of the outer wing

trailing edge, aft of the rear spar referencing document NTM 57-51-60/201 (X-Ray
ALI No. 57-51-60). If you look at this NTM, it states under Section 5.C 'Preparation
for Inspection' to make sure that fixed fairings (cylinder doors) at Zones 732/742
have been removed. The general thought is that the MLG fixed leg fairing doors
(Zones 732/742) do not need to be removed to conduct this inspection per the NTM
based upon how the X-ray inspection is conducted.

D5 Chosen Permanent Corrective Action(s)
Based on the United setup at SFO, the X-rays taken with the fixed leg fairings still
attached have the same detail and information as the X-rays taken with the fixed
leg fairings off. With this being the case, this is an unnecessary step that adds time
and money to this inspection process as well as running the risk of damaging doors
during the removal process. United requests the elimination of the MLG fixed leg
fairing removal requirement from the ALI task and the NTM (stated above).
Verification:
SFOIQ (United Inspection) conducted R&D that demonstrates proof of the above
statements in D5. Here are photos taken from this experiment which shows X-ray
data taken with and without the fixed leg fairing door.
1) Setup with fixed leg fairing doors still attached: R2 is the RH fixed leg fairing
door and 2 denotes the film position per ALI 57-51-60 Figure 202. The X-ray is
being shot straight up from the green “tube” to the required inspection area (along
red dashed arrow). The picture shows that the doors do not get in the way when
performing the X-ray of the required inspection area.

2) Setup per the NTM (with doors off): This setup shows the LH MLG with the door
off at film position 1 per NTM 57-51-60 Figure 202.
X-ray data is also available to view as well.
