a. remove final drive, differential and brake (left side)

3. 2. Install tooling (A) and a host, and remove sliding carrier assembly (3). The weight of the carrier
assembly is 48 kg (105 lb).
3. Remove remaining two bolts (2) and slinger (4) from carrier (7).
4. Remove retaining ring (5), the thrust ring and carrier (7) from ring gear (6).
5. Remove seal ring (9) from carrier (7).
6. Use a hammer and punch to push pin (10) into shaft (8).
7. Remove shaft (8), gear (11), discs (13) and bearing (12) from carrier (7).
8. Remove pin (10) from shaft (8).
9. Repeat Steps 6 through 8 for the remaining three planetary gears.

4. 10. Remove sun gear assembly (14) from carrier (15).
11. Remove three bolts (16), and remove plate (17) and gear (18) from the carrier.
12. Use tooling (B) to compress the retaining ring that holds carrier (15) in position in ring gear (6).
Separate the carrier from the ring gear. Remove the retaining ring from carrier (15).
13. Use a hammer and punch, and push pin (20) into shaft (19).
14. Remove shaft (19), gear (21), discs (23) and bearing (22) from carrier (15).
15. Repeat Steps 13 and 14 for the remaining two planetary gears.

5. 16. Place a bolt in the teeth of pinion (24) to prevent it from turning.
17. Bend the tang on lockwasher (26) away from nut (28). Use tool (C), and remove nut (28) from
the pinion.
18. Remove lockwasher (26) and washer (25) from the pinion.
19. Remove bolt (27), and remove carrier (29) from the support bracket.
20. Use tooling (D) to force pinion (24) from bearing cone (30) and carrier (29).
21. Use tooling (E) to remove bearing cone (31) from pinion (24).

6. 22. Remove bearing cups (32) from carrier (29).
23. Remove twelve bolts (33), and remove support bracket (34) and shims (35) from the housing.
24. Remove bolts (36), and remove gear (37) from housing (38).
NOTICE
Slight spring pressure exists between brake housing (39) and final
drive housing (41). Loosen bolts (40) evenly and slowly.
25. Fasten a hoist and tooling (F) to brake housing (39). Remove two bolts (40), and remove brake
housing (39) from final drive housing (41). The weight of the brake housing is 152 kg (335 lb).

7. 26. Remove three bolts and washers (42), retainer (52) and thrust washer (51).
27. Remove hub (48), four discs (43) and the three plates. Remove ring (44) from hub (48), if
necessary.
To prevent possible personal injury, loosen six bolts (45) slowly and
evenly to relieve the spring pressure behind retainer (50) and piston
(54).
28. Remove thrust washer (54). Slowly and evenly remove six bolts (45), and remove retainer (50),
piston (57), spring (56), ring (55) and O-ring seal (59) from brake housing (39).
29. Remove seal ring (53) from retainer (50).
30. Remove ring (60) and seal ring (58) from piston (57).
31. Remove six bolts (46), plate (49) and shims (47).

8. 32. Use tooling (G) to force brake housing (39) and bearing cone (61) from housing (38). Remove
bearing cone (61). Attach a hoist and tooling (F) to brake housing (39). Remove brake housing (39)
from housing (38). The weight of housing (39) is 77 kg (170 lb). The weight of housing (38) is 25
kg (55 lb).
NOTICE
Bearing cone (62) must be destroyed to remove it from the housing.
33. If necessary, remove bearing cone (62) from housing (38).
34. Remove bearing cups (63) and (65), and spacer (66) and retaining ring (64) from brake housing
(39).

9. 1. Install retaining ring (64) and spacer (66) in brake housing (39).
2. Lower the temperature of bearing cups (63) and (65), and install them in brake housing (39).

10. NOTE: If bearing cone (62) was removed from housing (38), a new bearing must be installed.
3. Heat bearing cone (62) to a maximum temperature of 135°C (275°F). Install the bearing cone on
housing (38). Make sure the bearing cone is seated on the housing.
4. Use a hoist and tooling (F) to position brake housing (39) on housing (38).
5. Heat bearing cone (61) to a maximum temperature of 135°C (275°F). Install the bearing cone on
housing (38).
6. Install plate (49) and three equally spaced bolts (46). Install tooling (H) on plate (49). Do not
install the shims at this time.
7. Position brake housing (39) on wooden blocks to get housing (38) off the floor.
8. Use tooling (H) to rotate housing (38) several revolutions.
9. Using tooling (J) to measure the bearing preload, tighten three bolts (46) equally until the proper
preload is reached. The bearing preload should be 2.25 to 4 N·m (20 to 36 lb in).

11. 10. When the proper bearing preload has been reached, measure the gap between the housing and
plate (49) with a feeler gauge in three places. Average the three measurements to determine the
correct shim pack thickness.
11. Remove three bolts (46) and plate (49). Position the correct shim pack and plate (49), and install
three bolts (46). Tighten the bolts to the correct torque. Recheck the bearing preload with tooling (H)
and (J). Install the remaining three bolts (46).
12. Put ring (55) and spring (56) in position in brake housing (39). Spring (56) must be installed
with the convex side up.
13. Install ring (60) on piston (57).
14. Install seal ring (58) in position in piston (57). Install seal ring (58) with the lip of the seal ring
as shown. Put clean oil on the seal ring.
15. Install piston (57) and O-ring seal (59) in the brake housing.
16. Install seal ring (53) in retainer (50). Install seal ring (53) with the lip of the seal ring as shown.
Put clean oil on the seal ring.
17. Position retainer (50) on piston (57). Make sure the oil passage in retainer (50) is aligned with
the oil passage and O-ring seal (59) in the brake housing. Install six bolts (45) that hold retainer (50)
in place and compress spring (56).
18. Position thrust washer (54) on retainer (50).
19. Start with a disc, and install discs (43) and plates. Alternate the discs and plates.
20. Install ring (44) in hub (48) if it was necessary to remove it.
21. Position hub (48), thrust washer (51) and retainer (52), and install three bolts and washers (42).

12. 22. Use a hoist and tooling (F) to position brake housing (39) on final drive housing (41). Install two
bolts (40) that hold the housings together.
23. Position gear (37) on housing (38), and install bolts (36).
24. Position shim pack (35), same thickness as was removed, and support bracket (34) on the brake
housing, and install twelve bolts (33).
25. Lower the temperature of bearing cups (32), and install them in carrier (29).

13. 26. Heat bearing cone (31) (not shown) to a maximum temperature of 135° (275°F), and install it on
pinion (24).
27. Position carrier (29) to pinion (24). Heat bearing cone (30) to a maximum temperature of 135°
(275°F), and install it on pinion (24).
28. Install washer (25), lockwasher (26) and nut (28) on the pinion (24). The large chamfer on nut
(28) must be next to lockwasher (26).
29. Position pinion (24) in a soft jawed vise, and gradually tighten nut (28) with tooling (C) to
preload the bearings.
30. Position carrier (29) on two wooden blocks, and use tooling (K) to measure the bearing preload.
The bearing preload should be 0.3 to 1.35 N·m (2.7 to 12 lb in).
31. After the correct bearing preload is obtained, bend a tang of lockwasher (26) into one of the four
slots in nut (28).
32. Position the pinion and carrier (29) on support bracket (34), and install bolt (27).

14. 33. Install tooling (L), and check the backlash of pinion (24). Measure the backlash at three equally
spaced teeth on pinion (24). Average the three measurements. The desired backlash is 0.21 ± 0.04
mm (.008 ± .002 in). If an adjustment is necessary, remove support bracket (34), and add or subtract
shims from shim pack (35).
34. Install bearing (22) in gear (21).
35. Put gear (21) and discs (23) in position in carrier (15), and install shaft (19).
NOTE: Make sure the rubber in pin (20) is not damaged. If the rubber in the pin is damaged,
replace the pin.
36. Align the hole in shaft (19) with the hole in the carrier, and install pin (20). Install the pin until
the end of the pin is even with the surface of the carrier.
37. Repeat Steps 34 through 36 for the remaining two planetary gears.
38. Install the retaining ring in carrier (15).
39. Slide carrier (15) into ring gear (6), using tooling (B) to compress the retaining ring. Remove
tooling (B).
40. Position gear (18) and plate (17) on the carrier, and install three bolts (16).

15. 41. Install sun gear assembly (14) in carrier (15).
42. Install bearing (12) in gear (11).
43. Put gear (11) and discs (13) in position in carrier (7), and install shaft (8).

44. Align the hole in shaft (8) with the hole in the carrier, and install pin (10). Install the pin until the

46. Install seal ring (9) on carrier (7).
47. Install carrier (7) in ring gear (6), and instal the thrust ring and retaining ring (5).

16. 48. Coat the flange of slinger (4) which contacts carrier (7) with 8C8422 sealant. Put slinger (4) in
position on carrier (7), and install two bolts (2).
49. Use a hoist and tooling (A) to position sliding carrier assembly (3) in the housing. Remove
tooling (A).
50. Install remaining two bolts (2).
51. Install three equally spaced bolts and washers (1) that hold the sliding carrier assembly in place.

10. Install seal ring (13) on piston (1) as shown. Put clean oil on the seal ring. Install ring (16) on
the piston.
11. Install seal ring (7) on retainer (8) as shown.
NOTE: Make sure the oil port in retainer (8) is aligned with O-ring seal (3).
12. Position spring (2), piston (1) and retainer (8), and install six bolts (10). Tighten the bolts
evenly to compress the spring behind the retainer and piston.
13. Install thrust washer (14).
14. Install ring (11), if it was removed.
15. Start with a disc, and install four discs (4) and the three plates. Alternate the discs and plates.
Install hub (9).
16. Install thrust washer (6) in retainer (5).
17. Position retainer (5), and install three bolts and washers (12).

Final Drive, Planetary And Brake (Right Side)

Remove And Install Right Final Drive, Planetary And Brake
Start By:
a. separate track (right side)
Before doing any service work which requires separating a track, a
thorough inspection of the front track roller frame must be made. See
Special Instruction, Form No. SMHS8273-02.
1. Remove the drain plug from the transmission and bevel gear case, and drain the power train oil.
Install the drain plug.

22. 2. Turn the final drive until drain plug (2) is on the bottom as shown. Remove drain plug (2), and
drain the oil from the final drive. Install the drain plug.
3. Remove the three bolts and cover (1) from the final drive. Remove the O-ring seal from the
cover.
4. Install tooling (a) and remove outer axle (3).
5. Adjust the top bracket on tooling (B) so that dimension (X) is 165 mm (6.5 in). The lower
mounting bracket must be installed with the spacers outward as shown.

23. 6. Remove two of the bolts from the sprocket segment. Fasten a hoist and tooling (B) onto the
final drive.
NOTICE
Do not remove two bolts (5) that hold the final drive to the planetary
and brake.
7. Remove twenty six bolts (4) that hold the final drive, planetary and brake to the frame.
8. Remove two bolts (6) that hold the planetary brake to the frame.
9. Using tooling (B) and a hoist, remove the final drive, planetary and brake as a unit. The weight
of the final drive, planetary and brake assembly is 577 kg (1270 lb).
10. Remove O-ring seals (7) and (8) from the planetary and brake housing.
NOTE: The following steps are for installation of the right final drive, planetary and brake.
11. Install O-ring seals (7) and (8) on the planetary and brake housing. Put clean oil on the O-ring
seals.
12. Fasten a hoist and tooling (B) onto the final drive. Make an adjustment to tooling (B) if
needed, to level the final drive, planetary and brake.
13. Put the final drive, planetary and brake in position on the tractor.
