This symposium provides an overview of the (r)evolution in intensive care medicine. The programme is based on lectures of 20 minutes where each speaker presents in two 10 minute talks (in der Beschränkung zeigt sich erst der Meister) the good things that happened in the last 40 years in critical care vs our mistakes or what is missing with respect to that topic. At the end of the session the speakers participate in an interactive round table discussion with online voting to get the audience involved. Will be discussed: Theoretical concepts, basic physiology and pathophysiology, monitoring, and future directions.

- The word quality has been thrown about a lot. My favourite definition of quality comes from Henry Ford - Quality is about doing something right when no one is looking. US Institute of Medicine defines the 6 characteristics of good quality healthcare - equitability, effective, efficient, safe, timely and patient-centred.
- To the sceptics amongst you, I leave you with my favourite quote from a non-medic This feisty looking lady is Grace Hooper. She was a Rear Admiral in the US Navy, “Amazing Grace”, she was one of the pioneers in computer programming, she coined the term debugging for fixing glitches in programmes and impressively had a US missile destroyer named after her.
