Duke Energy Empowers EH&S Sustainability and
Efficiency in Support of Corporate Expansion
Duke Energy is a leading multinational company that serves 3.9 million residents in the United States alone.
Since 1904, the company has grown to employ over 18,000 people with operations across North and South
America. One key to its success has been its commitment to Environmental, Health & Safety (EH&S) for
sustainability management – evident in the 2007 publication of Duke Energy’s first sustainability report and its
inclusion in the North America Sustainability Index. To continue moving ahead, however, the company had to
find more efficient and effective ways to manage EH&S compliance data within a changing corporate structure.
When the merger between Duke Power and Cinergy produced the Duke Energy Corporation, officials realized
that the company’s growth would make compliance with new EH&S requirements as well as modifications to
existing rules and regulations increasingly burdensome.
Duke Energy met that challenge with Essential Suite
software from ESS. Previously, more than 90 percent of
Duke Energy’s EH&S data was being managed through
manual processes and disparate point solutions. The result
was a high volume of disjointed EH&S data and processes
that made compliance difficult across the newly merged firm.
Duke Energy officials recognized that an integrated,
centralized EH&S solution could minimize manual and
duplicative data entry, processing and retention. ESS was
chosen from a group of 17 different vendors to provide Duke
Energy’s unified EH&S software platform.
By implementing Essential Suite, Duke Energy is replacing
over 30 legacy software applications and databases that
had previously been used by Duke Power and Cinergy to
manage their respective EH&S compliance obligations.
The company’s implementation of ESS’ integrated platform
began with the Essential Air, Essential Compliance Manager
and Essential Task Manager modules – which work
seamlessly together to drive compliance with EH&S
regulations such as Title V of the U.S. Clean Air Act.
The new platform enables Duke Energy to track specific
regulatory requirements, maintain accurate emissions
inventories and verify compliance with permit limits (or plan for
permit changes). Then it helps the staff execute by issuing
task assignments, sending alerts about potential violations,
tracking accountability, recording compliance history,
tracking costs, enabling communication across the
organization and documenting compliance through data
storage and functionality reports.
With Essential Suite, Duke Energy is on track to reduce its
total cost of technology ownership, and reduce the risk of
disruption due to compliance issues or staff turnover.
As additional modules come online in 2008, the company
expects to achieve even greater success meeting its
strategic sustainability goals.
