1. Using a suitable press, install the bearing (72) onto the shaft (71) .
2. Install the shaft (71) and bearing (72) into the body casing. Install the floating seal (73) onto
the body casing (74) . Refer to Disassembly and Assembly, "Duo Cone Seal - Install".
3. Install angular bearing (70) and floating seal (69) onto the gear casing. Refer to
Disassembly and Assembly, "Duo Cone Seal - Install"

4. Position gear casing as shown and install angular bearing (68) onto the gear casing.
5. Using a suitable lifting device, install gear casing (49) onto the body casing.
Note: After installing the gear casing onto the body casing , there will be a gap between two
components. The gap will be eliminated by installing and adjusting the ring nut (67) .
6. Use the following procedure to adjust the preload of the angular bearings (68) and (70) .

a. Install ring nut (67) . Use tooling (C) and tighten the ring nut (67) until there is no gap
between body casing, two bearings, gear casing, and ring nut.
b. Rotate gear casing (49) several turns.
c. Install and tighten one sprocket bolt into the sprocket flange on the gear casing.
d. Using tooling (E) on the sprocket bolt, attempt to rotate the gear casing.
e. Turn the ring nut (67) clockwise and counterclockwise until the rotating torque for the
bearings measured with tooling (E) is 35 ± 5 N·m (25 ± 3 lb ft)
Note: The pin location may not remain the same after rotating the ring nut to achieve the
correct bearing preload in step 6. To apply the pin to the ring nut, drill a new hole opposite
from the original pin position.
7. With the bearing preload set, drill the body casing (74) and the ring gear (67) and install the
pin (66) . Use the following procedure to drill the new pin hole.
a. Cover the threaded hole. Drill a 6 mm (0.25 inch) hole between body casing ( 74) and
ring nut (67) . Clean the assembly of debris in order to eliminate contamination.
b. Install pin (66) .

8. Apply tooling (A) to the bolt threads and install washer (65) and bolt (64) Torque bolt (64)
to 35 ± 2 N·m (26 ± 1 lb ft).
9. Position the body casing as shown and install piston assembly (44) and spring (45) . Install
steel balls (43) .

10. Position body casing as shown. Install swash plate (42) .
11. Install plate (39) , spring (40) , and plate (38) into the cylinder barrel (33) .
12. Using a suitable press, apply pressure to plate (38) in order to compress the spring (40) .
With spring (40) compressed, install the snap ring (41) into the cylinder barrel.

13. Position cylinder barrel as shown and install pins (37) into cylinder barrel (33) .
14. Install retainer ball (36) onto cylinder barrel (33) .

15. Install the nine pistons (35) onto retainer (34) . Install piston assembly (35) and retainer (34)
in the original location onto cylinder barrel (33) .
16. Position the final drive assembly as shown and install barrel assembly (33) .
17. Position the final drive assembly with the shaft facing upwards and install steel plates (32)
and friction plates (31) in the sequence of Friction, Steel, Friction and Steel.

18. Install backup rings (30) and (27) . Install O-ring seals (30) and (29) onto brake piston (26) .
Note: Use caution when using forced air, propelled parts can cause injury.
19. Use clean hydraulic oil to lubricate the seals and backup rings on the brake piston (26) .
Using a plastic hammer, install brake piston (26) into body casing (74) . Once installed, use
shop air to check operation.

20. Install O-ring seals (25) , (24) , and (23) .
21. Install bearing (22) into motor housing .
Note: Use Tooling (F) to secure valve plate to motor housing
22. Install valve plate (21) onto the motor housing .

23. Install O-ring seal (20) onto plug (17) . Install spring (18) and poppet (19) below plug (17) .
Repeat step on opposite side of motor cover.
24. Install plugs (17) into motor cover. Torque plugs (17) to 66 ± 7 N·m (49 ± 5 lb ft)

25. Install steel balls (16) into motor cover. Install O-ring seals (15) .
26. Install plugs (14) . Torque plugs (14) to 20 ± 2 N·m (177 ± 18 lb in). Install plugs (13) .
Torque plugs (13) to 49 ± 5 N·m (36 ± 7 lb ft).
27. install spring (11) and spool (12) under plug (10) .

28. Install plug (10) Torque plug (10) to 79 ± 8 N·m (58 ± 6 lb ft).
29. Install spool (7) , pusher (8) , and spring (9) into motor cover.
30. Install cover (6) Torque cover to 176 ± 18 N·m (130 ± 13 lb ft).

31. Install O-ring seal (5) and backup ring (4) .
32. Position body casing as shown and install motor cover (1) . Install bolts (2) . Torque bolts
(2) to 129 ± 13 N·m (95 ± 10 lb ft). Install relief valves (3) . Torque relief valves (3) to 142
± 14N·m (105 ± 10 lb ft).
33. Use the following procedure to check for correct parking brake torque
a. Position final drive assembly as shown and secure to holding fixture.

b. Insert tooling (D) into splines of shaft (71) . Using tooling (E) , attempt to apply 104
N·m (77 lb ft) to tooling (D) . If 104 N·m (77 lb ft) is achieved, the parking brake
torque is adequate. If 104 N·m (77 lb ft) cannot be achieved, check the final drive
motor components for damage.
34. Install plates (63) , bushings (62) , bearings (61) , and planetary gears (60) .

35. Install sun gear (57) . Install thrust plate (59) . Apply tooling (A) to threads and install bolts
(58) . Torque bolts (58) to 35 ± 2 N·m (26 ± 1 lb ft).
36. Install the three inner wheels (56) onto the carrier.

37. Install carrier (55) .
38. Install bearings (54) , planetary gears (53) , and sun gear (52) .

39. Install thrust plate (51) . Apply tooling (A) to threads and install bolts (50) . Torque bolts to
35 ± 2 N·m (26 ± 1 lb ft)
40. Apply tooling (B) to the mounting flange of the gear casing (49) and Install cover (48) onto
gear casing (49) . Install washers (47) and bolts (46) . Torque bolts to 14 ± 1 N·m (121 ± 9
lb in)

NOTICE
Care must be taken to ensure that fluids are contained during
performance of inspection, maintenance, testing, adjusting and repair
of the product. Be prepared to collect the fluid with suitable containers
before opening any compartment or disassembling any component
containing fluids.
Refer to Special Publication, NENG2500, "Caterpillar Tools and Shop
Products Guide" for tools and supplies suitable to collect and contain
fluids on Caterpillar products.
Dispose of all fluids according to local regulations and mandates.
1. Thoroughly clean all mating surfaces prior to installation.

Note: Adjust the height of Tooling (A) so that there is enough clearance between the
sprocket and track links for installation of the final drive and travel motor.
2. Raise the side of the machine and install Tooling (A) under the frame.
3. Attach a suitable lifting device to final drive and travel motor assembly (6). Install the final
drive and the travel motor into the undercarriage frame. The weight of the final drive and
travel motor is approximately 118 kg (260 lb).
4. Apply 9S-3263 Thread Lock Compound on the threads of twelve bolts (5). Install bolts (5).
Tighten the bolts to a torque of 270 ± 40 N·m (200 ± 30 lb ft).
5. Replace the O-ring seals in the ends of hose assemblies (4) with new O-ring seals.
6. Connect hose assemblies (4).
