NOTICE
Keep all parts clean from contaminants.
Contamination of the hydraulic system with foreign material will
reduce the service life of the hydraulic system components.
To prevent contaminants from entering the hydraulic system, always
plug or cap the lines, fittings, or hoses as they are disconnected. Cover
any disassembled components and clean them properly before
assembly.
Clean the hydraulic system properly after any major component
exchange or especially after a component failure, to remove any
contamination.
Note: If a failure occurs, an accurate diagnosis of the cause can prevent a recurrence. Information
is available to analyze failures for piston pumps and motors. Refer to Special Publication,
SEBD0641, "Analyzing Axial Piston Pump and Motor Failures".
Note: Inspect all parts. If any parts are worn or damaged use new parts for replacement. The
installation of used parts during reconditioning is acceptable. Reuse and salvage information is
available on piston pumps. Refer to Guideline For Reusable Parts and Salvage Operations,
SEBF8032, "Piston Pumps and Motors". During reconditioning, correct any conditions that might
have caused the original failure.
Note: O-rings, gaskets, and seals should always be replaced. A used O-ring may not have the
same sealing properties as a new O-ring. Use 1U-6396 O-Ring Assembly Compound during the
assembly procedure.
Note: Apply a light film of "10W" oil to all components before assembly.

1. Install O-ring seal (36) on plug (35) .
2. Install piston (34) and the plug in the travel motor body. Tighten the plug to a torque of 430
± 40 N·m (317 ± 30 lb ft).

3. Apply a thin coat of 4C-4030 Thread Lock Compound on the outer surfaces of lip type seal
(33) .
4. Use Tooling (A) and a suitable hammer to drive the lip type seal into the travel motor body.
Drive the seal downward until Tooling (A) makes contact with the travel motor housing.
5. Use Tooling (G) to install retaining ring (32) to the shaft end of the travel motor body.
6. Install two keys (31) inside the travel motor body.
7. Assemble washers (29), inner spacer (30) and outer spacer (28) in the proper orientation, as
shown.

8. Use Tooling (B) to measure the distance from the outer spacer to the surface of the table.
The distance should be 22.1 ± 0.6 mm (0.87 ± 0.02 inch). If this measurement is off, check
orientation of the washers. If orientation is correct, replace washers and spacers with new
parts.
9. Install inner spacer (28), four washers (25), and outer spacer (27) to barrel (24) .
10. Install guide (26) to the barrel.

11. Install piston assemblies (23) with retainer (22) in the piston assembly's original bore in
barrel (24) .
12. Install cam plate (21) on the barrel assembly.

13. Use a suitable press to install bearing (19) onto shaft (18) .
14. Use a suitable press in order to install inner race (20) onto shaft (18) .
Note: Place the two support plates under the lip of shaft (18) .

15. Insert shaft (18) in the barrel assembly.
16. Alternate five friction disks (17) and six separator plates (16) into the travel motor housing.
Start with a separator plate and end with a separator plate.

17. Attach Tooling (D) to the shaft. Use a suitable lifting device in order to place barrel
assembly into the travel motor body.
Note: Align the notches of the cam plate with the keys in the travel motor body before you
lower the barrel assembly into the travel motor body.
18. Use Tooling (C) to measure the depth from the top surface of the travel motor body to the
bronze face of the barrel assembly. The distance should be 38 ± 2 mm (1.5 ± 0.08 inch). If
this measurement is off, check orientation of the barrel assembly. Also check if the cam
plate is properly seated on the keys.

19. Install O-ring seals (15) and the backup rings on the brake piston.
Note: Make sure that you install the backup ring and the O-ring seal in the original position.
Refer to Illustration 19.
20. Install brake piston (14) in the body of the travel motor by hand. It may be necessary to use
a soft faced hammer to seat the brake piston correctly.
21. Use Tooling (C) to measure the distance from the top of the brake piston (14) to the top
surface of the travel motor body. The distance should be 20.8 ± 1 mm (0.82 ± 0.04 inch). If
this measurement is off, drive the brake piston further into the travel motor body.

22. Install springs (12) and plate (11) .
23. Install O-ring seals (13) .
24. Use Tooling (E) to drive the bearing into the head.

25. Install O-ring seal (9) onto the head.
26. Install port plate (8) on the head. It may be necessary to apply a small amount of grease to
the port plate in order to hold the port plate in place during the installation of the head.
27. Turn over head (6). Install Tooling (F) onto the head. Use a suitable lifting device to install
the head onto the travel motor.
28. Install three dowels (7) into the head.

29. Install an O-ring on each plug (5) .
30. Install six bolts (4) which hold the head in place. Tighten the six bolts to a torque of 530 ±
70 N·m (391 ± 52 lb ft).
31. Install plugs (5) that hold the dowels in the head. Tighten the plugs to a torque of 75 ± 7
N·m (55 ± 5 lb ft).
32. Install O-ring seals (2) and rings (3) on the displacement change valve.

33. Install displacement change valve (1) onto the head of the travel motor. Tighten the
displacement change valve to a torque of 50 ± 3 N·m (37 ± 2 lb ft).
34. To prevent possible damage to the travel motor, the unit should be filled with oil at least up
to the fill port prior to operation. Refer to Operation and Maintenance Manual for the
correct oil specification.
End By: Install the travel motor. Refer to Disassembly and Assembly, "Travel Motor - Install" in
this manual.

Note: The procedure to install the right hand travel motor and the procedure to install the
left hand travel motor is identical. The procedure that follows is for one of the travel motors.
1. Thoroughly clean the mating surfaces of the travel motor and the final drive.
Typical example
2. Replace the O-ring seal (6) that is used between the travel motor and the final drive.
3. Install O-ring seal (6) in the final drive. Apply clean hydraulic oil on the O-ring seal.
4. Install coupling (7) .

5. Carefully push travel motor (5) onto Tooling (B), as shown.
6. Remove two bolts from the head of travel motor (5) in order to install Tooling (A) .
7. Reposition the hoist and two lifting straps onto Tooling (A), as shown.
8. Slide the travel motor into the final drive.

9. Install bolt (4) and remove Tooling (B) .
10. Remove Tooling (A) and install the two bolts back into the head of the travel motor.
11. Install three bolts (3) that secure the travel motor to the final drive.
Typical example
12. Remove the plugs from the ends of hose assemblies (1) and (2) .
13. Connect hose assemblies (1) and (2) to the travel motor.
NOTICE
To avoid system damage, make sure that the hydraulic motor is
properly filled with hydraulic oil before start-up.

14. Fill the final drive with hydraulic oil to the correct level.
Reference: Refer to Operation and Maintenance Manual, "Lubricant Viscosities" for the
proper oil viscosity.
Reference: Refer to Operation and Maintenance Manual, "Refill Capacities" for the correct
amount.
Reference: Refer to Operation and Maintenance Manual, "Final Drive Oil Level - Check"
for the correct filling procedure.
15. Install high efficiency filters in place of the pilot filter, case drain filter, and the return filter.
Note: High efficiency filters should not be run for more than 250 hours before you change
back to the standard filters.
16. Obtain a hydraulic oil sample from the main S·O·S port.
Reference: Refer to Operation and Maintenance Manual, "Sampling Interval and Location
of Sampling Valve" for the correct location.
17. If the S·O·S sample exceeds ISO 18/15, flush the hydraulic system.
End By: Install the travel brake valve. Refer to Disassembly and Assembly, "Travel Brake Valve
- Install" in this manual.

Start By:
A. Remove the final drive sprocket. Refer to Disassembly and Assembly, "Final Drive
Sprocket - Remove and Install" in this manual.
B. Remove the travel brake valve. Refer to Disassembly and Assembly, "Counterbalance
Valve (Travel) - Remove" in this manual.
Note: The final drive sprocket does not need to be removed prior to removal of the final drive. If
the final drive is going to be disassembled, the sprocket should be removed.
Note: The procedure to remove the right hand final drive and the procedure to remove the left
hand final drive is identical. The procedure that follows is for one of the final drives.

Care must be taken to ensure that fluids are contained during
performance of inspection, maintenance, testing, adjusting, and repair
of the product. Be prepared to collect the fluid with suitable containers
before opening any compartment or disassembling any component
containing fluids.
Refer to Special Publication, NENG2500, "Dealer Service Tool
Catalog" for tools and supplies suitable to collect and contain fluids on
Cat products.
Dispose of all fluids according to local regulations and mandates.
1. Attach two lifting straps and a hoist to final drive (1) , as shown. It may be necessary to
adjust the lifting straps for correct balance of the final drive.

2. Oil will drain from the hose assembly (2) and hose assembly (3) when the hoses are
disconnected from the travel motor. Position an oil pan under the travel motor in order to
contain the hydraulic oil.
3. For assembly purposes, put identification marks on hose assembly (2) and hose assembly
(3) . Disconnect hose assembly (2) and hose assembly (3) from the travel motor. Put a plug
in the end of each hose assembly. Plugs prevent oil loss and plugs keep contaminants out of
the hydraulic system.
4. Use Tooling (A) to remove bolts (4) and the washers that hold the final drive to the
undercarriage frame assembly. Carefully remove the final drive and the travel motor from
the undercarriage frame assembly. The combined weight of the final drive and the travel
motor is 714 kg (1575 lb).
