Start By:
A. Remove the fuel injection lines. Refer to Disassembly and Assembly, "Fuel Injection Lines
- Remove and Install".
NOTICE
Keep all parts clean from contaminants.
Contaminants may cause rapid wear and shortened component life.
1. Ensure that the No. 1 cylinder is at the top center compression stroke. Refer to Testing and
Adjusting, "Finding Top Center Position for No. 1 Piston".

2. Remove bolts (2). Remove cover (1) and O-ring seal (3) .
3. Mark gear teeth (4) for timing purposes.

4. Remove bolt (6). Remove fuel injection pump (5) .
5. Remove O-ring seal (7). Remove the bolt and bracket (8). Remove nut (9) from gear (10) .
6. Use Tooling (A) to remove gear (10). Mark housing (11) and fuel injection pump (5) for
installation purposes. Remove bolts (12) and housing (11) .

Fuel Injection Pump - Install
SMCS - 1251-012
Installation Procedure
NOTICE
1. Clean all mating surfaces. Position housing (11) on fuel injection pump (5). Ensure that the
mark is in the proper position. Install bolts (12) .

2. Install gear (10). Install nut (9). Tighten nut (9) to a torque of 83 to 98 N·m (61 to 72 lb ft).
Install the bolt and bracket (8). Install O-ring seal (7) .
3. Position fuel injection pump (5) and install bolt (6) .

4. Ensure that timing marks on teeth (4) are in the correct position.
5. Install O-ring seal (3) and cover (1). Install bolts (2) .
6. Check the fuel injection timing. Refer to Testing and Adjusting, "Fuel Injection Timing -
Check - Distributor Pump".
End By: Install the fuel injection lines. Refer to Disassembly and Assembly, "Fuel Injection Lines
- Remove and Install".

NOTICE

Care must be taken to ensure that fluids are contained during
performance of inspection, maintenance, testing, adjusting and repair
of the product. Be prepared to collect the fluid with suitable containers
before opening any compartment or disassembling any component
containing fluids.
Refer to Special Publication, NENG2500, "Caterpillar Tools and Shop
Products Guide" for tools and supplies suitable to collect and contain
fluids on Caterpillar products.
Dispose of all fluids according to local regulations and mandates.
1. Remove bolt (1). Remove bolts (2). Disconnect tube assembly (3) and remove gasket (4) .
2. Remove bolts (9). Disconnect elbow assembly (10) and remove gasket (8). Remove nuts
(6). Remove turbocharger (5) and gasket (7) .

Exhaust Manifold - Remove and Install

Removal Procedure
Start By:
A. Remove the turbocharger, if equipped. Refer to Disassembly and Assembly, "Turbocharger
- Remove".
Hot engine components can cause injury from burns. Before
performing maintenance on the engine, allow the engine and the
components to cool.
NOTICE

1. Remove bolts (1). Remove exhaust manifold (3) and gasket (2) .
NOTICE
1. Install gasket (2) and exhaust manifold (3). Install bolts (1). Tighten the bolts, beginning at
the center of the exhaust manifold and working toward the ends, to the following torque:
Naturally aspirated engines ... 15 to 22 N·m (11 to 16 lb ft)
Turbocharged engines ... 28 to 33 N·m (21 to 24 lb ft)

End By: Install the turbocharger, if equipped. Refer to Disassembly and Assembly, "Turbocharger
- Install".

1. Remove bolts (6) and position crankcase breather (8) out of the way. Loosen clamp (7) and
disconnect the hose assembly. Remove bolts (4) and (5). Remove bolts (1). Remove inlet
manifold (2) and gasket (3) .
2. Remove bolt (9) and bracket (10). Remove bolts (11). Remove elbow assembly (12) and
gasket (13) .

The 9U-6145 Air Connector is part of the 9U-6274 Compression Test Tool Gp. The 9U-6145 Air Connector can
be ordered separately.
Start By:
A. Remove the rocker shaft assembly. Refer to Disassembly and Assembly, "Rocker Shaft and
Pushrod - Remove".
B. Remove the fuel injection nozzles. Refer to Disassembly and Assembly, "Fuel Injection
Nozzles - Remove".

NOTICE
1. Install Tooling (A). Install the bolt and bracket (2). Remove bolt (1) .
Note: Maintain air pressure in the cylinder that is being serviced until both of the valve
springs are removed and installed.

Personal injury can result from being struck by parts propelled by a
released spring force.
Make sure to wear all necessary protective equipment.
Follow the recommended procedure and use all recommended tooling to
release the spring force.
NOTICE
Ensure that the valve spring is compressed squarely or damage to the
valve stem may occur.
2. Install Tooling (B). Use Tooling (B) to compress valve spring (3). Remove cap (4) and
retainers (5) .
3. Release the pressure from Tooling (B) and remove Tooling (B). Remove retainer (6) .
4. If necessary, use Tooling (C) to remove seal (7) .
5. Use Tooling (D) to check the valve spring force. Refer to Specifications, "Cylinder Head
Valves".
6. Repeat Steps 1 through 5 for the removal of the remaining valve springs.
