Travel Motors

Remove & Install Travel Motors
Start By:
a. remove travel brake valves
1. Disconnect hose assemblies (1) and (2) from the travel motor. Put plugs in the hose assemblies
to prevent oil loss and to keep dirt and debris out of the hydraulic system.

NOTE: Four bolts hold the travel motor to the final drive.
2. Remove bolts (3) and (4).
3. Fasten Tool (A), a lifting sling and a hoist to the travel motor as shown.
4. Install two 20 mm diameter threaded rods (5) that are approximately 457 mm (18 in) long in
the bolt holes for bolts (3) and (4).
NOTE: It may be necessary to adjust the lifting sling and chain assembly used to remove the
travel motor so the unit will be level at all times.
5. Remove the two remaining bolts that hold the travel motor in position. Slide travel motor (6)
out on the threaded rods. Remove the travel motor from the machine. If necessary readjust the
chain assembly and lifting sling to keep the unit level. The weight of the travel motor is 125 kg
(275 lb).
6. Remove O-ring seal (7) from the final drive.
NOTE: The following steps are for the installation of the travel motor.
7. Check the condition of O-ring seal (7). If the seal is damaged, use new parts for replacement.
8. Install O-ring seal (7) in final drive. Lubricate the seal with clean hydraulic oil.
9. Fasten Tool (A), a lifting sling and a hoist to travel motor (6). Make sure the travel motor is
level. Put the travel motor in position in the final drive.
10. Install two of the bolts that hold the travel motor in position. Remove the two threaded rods
from the final drive, and install bolts (3) and (4).
11. Connect hose assemblies (1) and (2) to the travel motor.
NOTICE

To prevent damage to the travel motor, the case must be filled with
hydraulic oil to the fill port prior to operation.

Disassemble & Assemble Travel Motors
Start By:
a. remove travel motors
1. Thoroughly clean the outside of the travel motor prior to disassembly. Fasten travel motor (1) to
Tool (A). The weight of the travel motor is 125 kg (275 lb).
2. Put an alignment mark across all housings of the travel motor for assembly purposes.
3. Disconnect tube assembly (2).

There is spring force against brake cover (4). When 12 socket head bolts
(3) are removed, the spring force will be released. To prevent possible
personal injury, the brake cover must be retained during removal of
socket head bolts (3).
4. Remove two socket head bolts (3) from the brake cover that are 180 degrees apart. Replace
these two bolts with bolts that are slightly longer in length. The two longer bolts will retain the
brake cover when the remaining 10 socket head bolts (3) are removed.
5. Slowly and evenly remove the 10 remaining socket head bolts (3) that hold the brake cover in
position. Remove the two longer bolts (3). Remove brake cover (4) from the brake assembly.
6. If necessary, remove brake adjusting screws (5) from the brake cover.
7. Remove brake assembly (6) from the head assembly.

NOTE: There is an inner spring and an outer spring in each spring set.
8. Remove 24 spring sets (7) from the brake piston.
9. Turn the brake housing over. Remove O-ring seal (8).
10. Using two suitable size forcing screws (9), remove brake piston (10) from the brake housing.
11. Remove 13 discs (11) and 12 plates (12).

12. Remove O-ring seal (13).
13. Using Tool (B), remove retaining ring (14). Remove gear (15).
14. Using Tool (C), remove retaining ring (16).
15. Remove the nut and bushing (17) from the rod assembly.
16. Remove four socket head bolts (18) that hold the head assembly to the motor housing.
17. Fasten Tool (D) and a hoist to head assembly (19) as shown. Carefully remove the head
assembly from the motor housing. The weight of the head assembly is 25 kg (55 lb).
18. Remove thrust plate (20) from the head.

19. Remove O-ring seal (22) from the head.
20. Remove bearing (23) from the head.
21. Remove pin (21) from the head.
22. Remove O-ring seal (25) from the motor housing.
23. Turn the motor housing on its side as shown.
NOTICE
During removal of the barrel assembly from the motor housing, do not
let the components come apart. All parts in the barrel assembly must
be reinstalled in their original locations.
24. Carefully remove barrel assembly (24) from the motor housing so the components do not
come apart.
25. Disassemble barrel assembly (24) as follows:

a. Put identification marks on nine piston assemblies (27) as to their location in retainer (26) and
barrel (28). Remove nine piston assemblies (27) and retainer (26), as a unit, from barrel (28).
b. Separate nine piston assemblies (27) from retainer (26).
c. Remove guide (29) from the barrel.
NOTE: Make a note of the way shims (30) are positioned on the barrel for installation purposes.
d. Remove shims (30) from the barrel.
26. Remove adjusting screw (31) from the motor housing. Remove the O-ring seal from the
adjusting screw.
27. Remove swash plate assembly (32) from the motor housing.
28. Disassemble the swash plate assembly as follows:

a. Remove plate (33).
b. Remove three pins (34) from the plate.
c. Remove two cap screws (35).
d. Remove plate (36).
e. Remove two plungers (37).
29. Using Tool (B), remove retaining ring (38) that holds shaft assembly (39) in the motor
housing.
30. Using a soft faced hammer, remove shaft assembly (39) from the motor housing in the
direction shown.
31. Disassemble shaft assembly (39) as follows:

a. Remove O-ring seal (40) from cover (41).
b. Remove cover (41) from the shaft.
c. Remove lip-type seal (42) from cover (41).
d. Using Tool (C), remove retaining ring (43) that holds bearing (44) in position on the shaft.
e. Put the shaft in a press as shown. Press the shaft out of bearing (44).

32. Remove two screws (47) and two bearings (46) from the motor housing. Remove two
bushings (45) from the motor housing.
NOTE: The following steps are for the assembly of the travel motor.
33. Make sure all parts of the travel motor are thoroughly clean and free of dirt and debris prior to
assembly.
34. Check the condition of all O-ring seals and rings used in the travel motor. If any of the seals or
rings are damaged, use new parts for replacement.
35. Using Tool (E), install two bushings (45) in the motor housing. Install the bushings until they
are seated in the motor housing.
36. Put two bearings (46) in position in the motor housing as shown. Put 9S-3263 Thread Lock
on the threads of two screws (47). Install the two screws, and tighten them to a torque of 5 N·m (4
lb ft).
37. Assemble shaft assembly (39) as follows:
a. Heat bearing (44). Install the bearing unit it makes contact with the shoulder on the shaft.
b. Using Tool (C), install retaining ring (43).

c. Using Tool (E), install lip-type seal (42) in cover (41). Install the seal until it makes contact
with the counterbore in the cover and with the sealing lip facing toward the inside. Lubricate the
lip of the seal with clean hydraulic oil.
d. Install cover (41) on the shaft as shown.
e. Install O-ring seal (40) on the cover. Lubricate the O-ring seal with clean hydraulic oil.
38. Using a soft faced hammer, install shaft assembly (39) in the motor housing. Make sure the
shaft assembly is seated in the motor housing.
39. Using Tool (B), install retaining ring (38) in the motor housing.
40. Assemble the swash plate assembly as follows:
a. Install two plungers (37).

b. Install plate (36).
c. Install two cap screws (35).
d. Install three pins (34) in the plate.
e. Install plate (33).
41. Install swash plate assembly (32) in the motor housing as shown.
42. Install the O-ring seal on adjusting screw (31). Install the adjusting screw in the motor
housing.
43. Assemble barrel assembly (24) as follows:
a. Install the original amount of shims (30) on the barrel. Make sure the shims are installed in their
original positions.

b. Install guide (29) on the barrel as shown. Make sure the guide is seated squarely.
c. Install nine piston assemblies (27) in their original location in retainer (26).
d. Install the piston assemblies with the retainer in their original location in the barrel.
NOTICE
Make sure barrel assembly (24) does not fall apart during installation
in the motor housing.
44. Carefully install barrel assembly (24) over the shaft in the motor housing. Make sure the
components of the barrel assembly do not fall apart during installation.
45. Install O-ring seal (25) in the motor housing.
46. Install pin (21) in the head.
47. Install bearing (23) in the head. Make sure the bearing makes contact with the counterbore in
the head during installation.
48. Install O-ring seal (22) in the head.

49. Install thrust plate (20) on the head as shown.
50. Fasten Tool (D) and a hoist to head assembly (19) as shown. Carefully put the head assembly
in its original position on the motor housing.
51. Put 9S-3263 Thread Lock on the threads of four socket head bolts (18). Install four socket
head bolts (18) that hold the head assembly to the motor housing.
52. Put 9S-3263 Thread Lock on the threads of bushing (17). Install the bushing and the nut on
the rod assembly in the motor housing.
53. Using Tool (C), install retaining ring (16) on the shaft.
54. Put gear (15) in position on the shaft. Using Tool (B), install retaining ring (14) to hold the
gear in position.

55. Install O-ring seal (13) in the head assembly.
56. Install 13 discs (11) and 12 plates (12) in alternating order. Start with a disc and end with a
disc.
57. Install brake piston (10) in the brake housing.
58. Turn the brake housing over. Install O-ring seal (8) in the brake housing.
NOTE: There is an inner spring and an outer spring in each spring set.
59. Install 24 spring sets (7) in the brake piston.

60. Install brake assembly (6) in the head assembly as shown.
61. Reinstall brake adjusting screws (5) in the brake cover.
62. Put brake cover (4) in its original position on the head assembly.
63. Put 9S-3263 Thread Lock on the threads of 12 socket head bolts (3) that hold the brake cover
in position. Install the 12 socket head bolts, and tighten them evenly to compress the spring sets.

64. Reinstall tube assembly (2).
NOTICE
To prevent damage to the travel motor, the housing must be filled with
clean hydraulic oil to the fill port before operation.

Final Drives & Travel Motors

Remove & Install Final Drives & Travel Motors
Start By:
a. separate track assemblies
b. remove travel brake valves
c. remove final drive sprockets *
*
The final drive sprocket does not have to be remove prior to removal of the final drive and travel
motor. However, if the final drive is to be disassembled and assembled, it is easier to remove
sprocket at this time.
1. Fasten Tool (A) and a hoist to final drive (1) as shown.

2. Remove 20 bolts (2) and the washers that hold the final drive to the track roller frame assembly.
Carefully remove the final drive and travel motor from the track roller frame assembly. The
combined weight of the final drive and travel motor is 680 kg (1500 lb).
NOTE: The following steps are for the installation of the final drive and travel motor.
3. Make sure the mating surfaces of the final drive and track roller frame assembly are clean and
free of dirt and debris.
4. Fasten Tool (A) and a hoist to final drive (1). Put the final drive in position in the track roller
frame assembly.
5. Put 9S-3263 Thread Lock on the threads of 20 bolts (2) that hold the final drive to the track
roller frame assembly. Install the 20 bolts and washers, and tighten them evenly.
End By:
a. install final drive sprockets
b. install travel brake valves
c. connect track assemblies

Disassemble & Assemble Final Drives
Start By:
a. remove final drives and travel motors
1. Thoroughly clean the outside of the final drive and travel motor prior to disassembly.
2. Remove four bolts (1) and the washers that hold travel motor (2) to the final drive. Fasten a
hoist to the travel motor, and carefully remove it from the final drive. The weight of the travel
motor is 125 kg (275 lb).

3. Remove O-ring seal (3) and coupler (4) from the final drive.
4. Fasten a hoist to the final drive, and turn it over 180 degrees. The weight of the final drive is
469 kg (1035 lb).
5. Fasten the final drive to Tool (A) as shown. Put an alignment mark across the sections of the
final drive for assembly purposes. The parts must be reinstalled in their original locations.
6. Remove two setscrews (5) from the cover assembly of the final drive.
7. Fasten Tool (B) and a hoist to cover assembly (7) as shown.
8. Remove 20 bolts (6) and the washers that hold the cover assembly in place.
9. Using a soft faced hammer, break the seal between cover assembly (7) and the ring gear.
Remove the cover assembly. The weight of the cover assembly is 52 kg (115 lb).
