1. OVERZICHT VAN DE CANADESE VOEDINGSSECTOR
De F&B sector in Canada is een belangrijk onderdeel van de Canadese economie en werkgelegenheid,
hoewel het belang hiervan regionaal sterk verschilt. De sector is erg exportgericht, voornamelijk naar de
VS, met al jaren een positieve handelsbalans als gevolg. Ten slotte zijn er de laatste jaren enkele
verschuivingen en nieuwe trends in de consumptie van voedingsmiddelen op te merken, die
opportuniteiten creëren voor nieuwe spelers.

BELANG VAN DE VOEDINGSSECTOR IN DE TOTALE ECONOMIE
De Canadese landbouw- en voedingssector was in 2011 de derde grootste industrie in Canada, na de
financiële sector en de ‘non-food manufacturing industries’. Met een bijdrage van 101,1 miljard C$ was
de sector verantwoordelijk voor 8% van het Canadese Bruto Binnenlands Product. Sinds de recessie van
2009 is de landbouw- en voedingssector gestaag gegroeid, ondanks een inkrimping van de totale
Canadese economie.

Daarnaast is de sector ook een belangrijke werkgever in Canada: in 2011 bood de landbouw- en
voedingssector werk aan 2,1 miljoen Canadezen of een achtste van de Canadese beroepsbevolking.
