What kind of media institution might distribute your media product and why? Question 3
Our production company ‘FWE Films’ make low budget, British, horror/mystery films. We focus on the objective to make films that aim towards our target audience 17-21 year olds. This student audience are the current social group that would go see these types of films at the cinemas.
This being a British film, I have decided to exhibit it into the main cinemas, as it would get more appeal in the film industry. The UK being the main viewers of this, ‘VUE’ and ‘ODEON’, would be the best option for distributing the film. Because of the widely known genre of this film it will have a great profit on being viewed in main cinemas not art galleries or old cinemas such as the ‘Phoenix’in North London. http://myvue.com/cinemas/index.asp?SessionID=&ci=44
If my film could not get into the major cinemas I would take it to a film festival for example one in London. As this may interest the major studios and collect the views from the audience to get feedback. As today’s media has developed quite fast online, most films can be downloaded off the internet, having clips of our title sequence could be good to interest the audience and gather the good press needed for the film to recognised in a positive way
I would choose ‘Lionsgate’ as they specialise in the big films that are quite good and that make a lot of profit and do well in the distribution in cinemas and DVD's etc. Many of the films that I researched into had the major companies from America distributing their films, including Columbia Tristar Film Distributors and Entertainment in Video They also had links on YouTube, Facebook, websites and plenty of images and posters on the internet which gave another selling point. http://www.lionsgate.com/?section=film
‘Columbia’ founded in 1991 has distributed such films as ‘Bad Boys II’ and ’Daddy Day Care’ so because of the genre difference I did not want ’Columbia’ to become my distributor for my film. ‘Entertainment in Video’ was founded in 1978 and distributes such films as ‘Piranha’ and ‘White noise’ this was a good choice for it to become the distributor for my film, but because it only produced it in DVD or video form this was not suitable. But because of it being a British distributor I thought it would be a better option than ‘Columbia’. http://www.imdb.com/company/co0077851/
Because of the rising usage of the internet I would add plenty of clips and trailers onto the web for people to view to get a taster of the film before paying to go see it in cinema or download it online. Producing the correct posters to advertise the film is very important as it will be giving the audience the first impression what the film is about and like.
