Drospirenone is used in combina on with ethinyl estradiol as a birth control pill (oral contracep ve) in women. It
is also used for a disease called premenstrual dysphoric disorder (PMDD; severe depression, irritability and
tension just before menstrua on), moderate acne, and to prevent osteoporosis in post-menopausal women.

Estrogens diﬀuse into their target cells and interact with a protein receptor. Target cells include the female
reproduc ve tract, the mammary gland, the hypothalamus, and the pituitary. Estrogens increase the hepa c
synthesis of s** hormone binding globulin (SHBG), thyroid-binding globulin (TBG), and other serum proteins and
suppress follicle-s mula ng hormone (FSH) from the anterior pituitary. Drospirenone is progesterone, and
together with estradiol, it can provide contracep on by suppressing release of ovum (eggs) from your ovary, and
interfering with other mechanisms that support occurrence of pregnancy. It suppresses the natural progesterone
in the body, and thereby helps in PMDD and acne. Its mechanism of ac on in preven on of osteoporosis is not
known.
What is Ethinyl estradiol and Drospirenone
Ethinyl estradiol and Drospirenone also sold under the brand name Yaz is a birth control pill. It works by
preven ng ovula on or the release of a female egg from the ovaries. It also causes changes in the cervical and
uterine lining making the cervical mucus more viscous thereby making it harder for male sperms to reach the
uterus and also for a fer lized egg to a ach to the uterus wall.
This pill is used as a contracep ve method to prevent pregnancy. It is also used in trea ng moderate acne in
women who are above 14 years of age and have started ge ng their periods, and who also wish to use

Ethinyl estradiol/Drospirenone is also used for allevia ng the symptoms of premenstrual dysphoric disorder
(PMDD), such as depression, anxiety, irritability, concentra on troubles, lethargy, changes in sleep pa erns or

This pill may also be given for treatments beside those listed above.
Important Information about Ethinyl estradiol and Drospirenone
Ethinyl estradiol and drospirenone is not recommended if you are pregnant or if you have recently delivered a
baby. You must also not take this pill if you are suﬀering from any of these condi ons: heart disease, out of control
high blood pressure, blood clo ng disorder, problems with circula on, problems in eyes or kidneys due to
diabetes, unexplained vaginal bleeding, liver disease or liver cancer, migraine, if you are smoker and above 35,
breast or uterine cancer, jaundice due to birth control pills, or a heart a ack or a stroke in the recent past.
You may need to employ an alternate birth control method such as condoms or spermicide in the ini al few days
of star ng with the pills or if you happen to miss a dose. Consult your doctor for more details.
Always store ethinyl estradiol and drospirenone pills in a cool and dry place away from heat, light, moisture,
children and pets.
Before taking Ethinyl estradiol and Drospirenone

Before taking this pill, let your doctor know about all your medical history and if you are allergic to any
medica ons or any ingredients in ethinyl estradiol and drospirenone. You must not take this medica on if you
have any of the condi ons men oned above.
To safely use this pill, tell your doctor if you have any of these cond ons: high blood pressure, high cholesterol,
obesity, depression in the past, hypothyroidism, gall bladder disease, diabetes, seizures, irregular periods,
tuberculosis, or a history of fibrocys c disease in breasts, or an abnormal mammogram.
How do I take Ethinyl estradiol and Drospirenone?
Strictly follow the direc ons of your doctor while taking ethinyl estradiol and drospirenone. Any departure from
the amount of prescribed dosage can cause harmful health effects and render the medica on ineffec ve.
Start with the fist pill on the first day of your period or on the first Sunday a er that. You may need an alternate
birth control measure for the ini al days of using these pills. You may use condoms or spermicide as back up
contracep on. You may need frequent doctor visits while taking these pills.
Take one pill every day orally and ensure that you don’t go more than 24 hours without a pill. Make a habit to take
the pill at the same me every day. When the pills get over, start a new pack. Get a refill before the previous pack
gets over as missing on a single dose can result in pregnancy.
You may get breakthrough bleeding during the first 3 months of star ng this medica on. See your doctor if it is
persistent and turns heavy. Stop taking the pills if you experience severe vomi ng and diarrhea and employ back
up birth control method.

What if I miss a dose?
Missing even a single pill increases the risk of your pregnancy. So don’t skip a dose as far as possible.
If you happen to skip one ac ve ethinyl estradiol and drospirenone pill, take two on the day that you remember.
Then have one pill each day for the rest of the pack.
If you happen to skip two ac ve pills consecu vely in the first and second week, have two pills each day for two
consecu ve days. Then have one pill each day for the rest of the pack. Adopt back up contracep on for at least
one full week following the missed doses.
If you happen to skip two ac ve pills consecu vely in the third week, discard the rest of the pills and start a new
pack the same day if you are a Day 1 starter. If you start on Sunday, con nue taking a pill every day un l Sunday.
On Sunday, discard rest of the pack and open a new pack that day.
If you happen to skip three ac ve pills consecu vely in week 1, 2, or 3, discard the rest of the pack and open a
new pack on the same day if you are a Day 1 starter. If you start on Sunday, con nue taking a pill every day un l
Sunday. On Sunday, discard away rest of the pack and start a new pack that day.
What if I Overdose?

If you overdose on ethinyl estradiol and drospirenone pills, you may experience symptoms like nausea, vomi ng,
and vaginal bleeding.
Things to avoid while taking Ethinyl estradiol and Drospirenone
If you are a smoker and over 35 years of age, taking ethinyl estradiol and drospirenone pills can increase the risk
of blood clot, stroke, or heart a ack. These pills may be more likely to cause blood clots than other types of
contracep ve pills.
This pill will not protect you from STDs so it is wise to stay away from unsafe s**ual prac ces.
Ethinyl estradiol and Drospirenone Side Effects

condi ons. Get immediate and urgent medical in such cases.
Interaction with other Drugs
Certain medica ons can interfere with ethinyl estradiol and drospirenone. Let your doctor know about all present
medica ons and your en re medical history.
Some of the drugs than can interact with this medica on are: aromatase inhibitors (anastrazole, exemestane),
raloxifene, sodium tetradecyl sulfate, tamoxifen, zanidine.
Drospirenone may increase your blood potassium level. Some other medicines can also increase the blood
potassium levels like aliskiren, ACE inhibitors like enalapril/lisinopril, angiotensin receptor blockers like
losartan/valsartan, heparin, NSAIDs such as ibuprofen/naproxen, potassium-sparing “water pills”/diure cs like
eplerenone/spironolactone/triamterene). Your doctor will know about the interac ons and prescribe accordingly.
The above list of interac ons is non exhaus ve and there may be other interac ons which your doctor may know.
