8. Questions… Any words you’d like to know a sign for? Any other questions about signing to babies?
I know most of us aren’t parents…. We have all been around children or at least know someone who has…How many times have you wondered what is going on in their head?
Hypothetical Situation: Imagine you’re a new parent and you wake up in the middle of the night to your 8 month old crying. You think a simple diaper change will fix the problem but that doesn’t work and your baby keeps crying. So you fix a bottle, and he’s still crying, in fact its getting worse. You rock him, sing his favorite songs and nothing is working. All you can think about is how you have to get up early for work and you wish you knew what was going through your son’s head so you could all get some rest. Finally an hour later, on a last ditch effort you hand him his teddy bear and he immediately calms down. All that crying and he just wanted a bear! Now imagine if he could have told you he wanted his bear from the get-go. While that may seem like a far off fantasy for many parents, it is a completely realistic senerio if your child has been taught some basic sign language.
How many of you have heard of the idea… How soon do you think you should start signing to your baby..ASAP (6-8 months is when they begin to hold eye contact so that’s probably the earliest they’ll really start picking up the signs) but its never too late – I learned in 3rd grade (8yrs)
-people have actually been teaching kids sign language for years.. Think about it, we already teach our kids sign language. So big.. Bye-bye..Hold me..blows kisses… high fives-Its important to understand that sign language does not replace speech, children who sign actually tend to speak sooner As long as you speak to your child in conjunction with the sign language, their speech will develop normally and often times quicker-Sign language promotes clarity if it is done on a regular basis, not confusion.. Of course your baby won’t understand it at first, but that’s the same as verbal language-Sign language is not outside a baby’s natural abilities, it is normal for them to want to jesture-some people believe that babies do not have the ability to sign, but as you will witness throughout this presentation.. Children can sign from a very young age
-Twins have been known to communicate to each other between 3-4 months-Because they can start holding eye contact between 6-8 months, this is really when they start to learn and mimic your signsBabies hand muscles develop faster than the muscles in their mouth.. They have the knowledge to communicate but don’t have the physical ability to talk…..less likely to throw tantrums… can enjoy the time you’re spending with your baby
-I want to teach you a couple signs but before I do its important to understand.. -There is no need to go out and buy books and dvds on signing.. If you and your baby have an understanding what a sign means, that’s fine, you don’t have to follow ASL it doesn’t really matter if other babies have a different sign… there’s no universal guide that you have to follow.
-Sing songs just like you do to teach them words, read books and sign some of the words, teach them during everyday activities-reinforce with actions-Frustration defeats the purpose of signing-When your baby seems comfortable with the first few signs gradually add more-This video is fairly self-explanitory but it shows a mother and her child signing
