James Michael DeBardeleben had a troubled childhood and criminal history spanning from age 16, including arrests for weapons offenses, theft, sodomy and kidnapping. He joined the Air Force but was discharged for disciplinary issues. He had multiple marriages and fathered children but also engaged in criminal activities with some partners. Beginning in 1971 at age 31, he is believed to have murdered at least 8 victims, mostly young women, through strangulation and stabbing, over a period of 12 years. He also committed numerous other crimes such as counterfeiting, assault, and kidnapping/sexual assault.
