Butane (C4H10) Ethyl Pentane (C7H16)

           Both of these molecules
            have all single bonds;
             therefore, they are
                    alkanes
2,3 Dimethyl hexane
       (C8H18)

The 2, 3 in the dimethyl hexane
means there are 2 methyl groups
on the second and third carbon
                              atom in hexane
FUN FACTS
• The alkanes are highly
  combustible.
• Methane, ethane, propane and
butane are gases and used directly
  as fuels.
• Gasoline is a mixture of alkanes
from pentane up to about decane
• Alkane are used in hundreds of
  products such as plastics, paints,
  drugs, cosmetics, detergents, and
  insecticides. The fossil fuel
resource from which we obtain the
alkanes is much too valuable to
burn it all as a motor fuel.
