Māui and the fish
Māui, a young Māori boy with special powers, secretly hid on his brothers' fishing boat despite being told he was too young to go. When they reached the fishing spot, Māui surprised his brothers but showed his skill by using his special hook to catch an enormous fish that turned out to be the North and South Islands of New Zealand.

- 2. • Māui wasa Māori boy who had special powers. • He had four older brothers that went out fishing everyday. • Māui also wanted to go fishing but his brothers said, “You’re too young to go fishing!”
- 3. • One morning,Māui hid inside his brothers waka.
- 4. • When they reachedthe fishing place, Māui jumped out from his hiding spot. • “What are you doing here??” His brothers were surprised.
- 5. • His brotherslaughed at him but Māui pulled out his special line and hook he had made. • He threw the hook into the water and waited.
- 6. • Suddenly, hefelt the line being pulled. • It was something very big and heavy! • Māui and his brothers pulled and pulled until…
- 7. • Something big suddenly appeared! •The fish Māui had caught was land!
- 9. • And that’swhy New Zealand’s North Island looks like a fish, and New Zealand’s South Island looks like a waka.
