The Baltimore Hon subculture originated in the 1950s-1960s and represents working class women who dress in brightly colored, eccentric styles. A typical Hon wears tight spandex, gaudy jewelry, dramatic makeup and hairdos. Café Hon, founded in 1992 in the Baltimore neighborhood of Hampden, celebrates and embodies Hon culture through its food and decor. The annual HonFest festival further spreads awareness of this quirky subculture. Filmmaker John Waters has also promoted Hon culture through his movies set in Baltimore.
