2. Description
Great for entertaining guests on cold days or during the wintertime,
mulled cider warms up the stomach and makes for a lively evening that
can stimulate conversation and spread good cheer. In this recipe, adapted
from Fix-It and Forget-It Cookbook by Dawn J. Ranck and Phyllis Pellman
Good, mulled cider is warmed in a crock pot for two to eight hours on low.
The cider is flavored with allspice, cloves, cinnamon, nutmeg, oranges, and
brown sugar creating a heady and invigorating drink.
An excellent Christmas party or holiday drink, mulled cider is best enjoyed
around an intimate circle, a bonfire, campfire, or fireplace. Spicy, citrusy,
and mildly intoxicating, mulled cider helps keep the party going. Few
alcoholic drinks are served hot since much of the spirit evaporates with
heating. Mulled cider is one of the few drinks that is served warm and still
gives you a flush and gentle buzz after a cup or two.
4. Preparation
1. Cut a square of cheesecloth and place the allspice,
cloves, nutmeg, and cinnamon sticks inside it. Tie up
the corners to secure the spices in a bag.
2. Pour the brown sugar and cider into the crock pot.
Stir. Add the bag of spices and the orange slices.
Cover and simmer on low for 2 to 8 hours.
