Postoperative instructions after Root Canal Treatment
1. POST OPERATIVE INSTRUCTIONS TO
PATIENT AFTER ROOT CANAL
TREATMENT
• In case your tooth has
been left open for
drainage, then follow these
instructions until your
next appointment:
1. After the appointment,
when anesthetic has been
used, your lips, teeth and
tongue may be numb for
several hours. Avoid any
chewing on the side of the
treated tooth until the
numbness has completely
worn off.
2. 2. Irrigate your tooth as instructed with lukewarm saline water
after every meal or snack. Avoid using toothpicks to remove
debris within the tooth.
3. Avoid blocking the open tooth with food by eating on the
opposite side of your mouth. Avoid eating foods that may
contain small seeds in it that may get caught in the tooth.
4. If medication(s) have been prescribed, use according to
directions.
Remember that even though your tooth may be
comfortable, follow-up treatment is necessary.
3.
4. Root canal therapy often takes two or
more appointments to complete
A temporary filling or crown is placed to protect the tooth
between appointments. Between appointments, it's common
for a small portion of your temporary filling or crown to wear
away or break off. To protect the tooth and help keep your
temporary filling/crown in place:
• Avoid chewing sticky foods.
• Avoid biting hard foods and hard substances.
• If possible, chew only on the opposite side of your mouth.
5. Sometimes depending on the circumstances, the tooth and
surrounding tissues may remain sore for a few weeks post
treatment. The three most common reasons for pain are
1. sore jaw joint from having your mouth open for a prolonged
time
2. sore muscle at the injection site.
3. sore gum from the rubber dam placement.
6. • This should subside within a few days. Even if you were not
experiencing any discomfort prior to treatment, it is normal for
you to experience some degree of discomfort for a few days
after. The tenderness is normal and is no cause for alarm. To
control discomfort, take pain medications as prescribed. If
antibiotics are prescribed, continue to take them for the
indicated length of time, even if all symptoms and signs of
infection are gone
7.
8. • Usually, the last step after root canal treatment is the
placement of a crown on the tooth. A crown covers and
protects the tooth from breaking in the future. Delay in
obtaining final restoration (crown) may result in fracture
and/or possible loss of the tooth.
• Do not apply any pressure to the tooth or teeth under treatment
for the next few days. After the initial few days following
treatment, you may start a soft diet working your way back to
normal function.
• The tooth that has had appropriate endodontic treatment
followed by a proper restoration can last as long as your other
natural teeth. After the tooth has been restored, you need to
practice good oral hygiene, including brushing, flossing,
regular checkups and cleanings.
• We expect your recovery period to be as uneventful as
possible.
