The Milgauss is a Rolex watch designed to resist magnetic fields up to 1,000 gauss. It features a two-component ferromagnetic alloy shield protecting the movement and a Parachrom blue hairspring that is resistant to shocks and unaffected by magnetism. Introduced in 1956, the Milgauss earned a reputation for its ability to withstand the strong magnetic fields used in scientific laboratories, especially at CERN.
1. the milgauss
The Milgauss, introduced in 1956, was designed to meet the demands of
the scientific community and is capable of withstanding magnetic fields
of up to 1,0 0 0 gauss. After rigorous testing by CERN engineers, it earned
a reputation as the perfect magnetic shield. Today’s Milgauss features a
Parachrom hairspring that provides additional protection from the effects
of magnetism. The Milgauss is presented here in 904L steel with a green
sapphire crystal.

3. the spirit of the milgauss
the largest laboratory, the tiniest particle
CERN (European Council for Nuclear Research), the world’s pre-eminent particle physics laboratory, hosts the world’s highest-energy particle
accelerator. CERN was also one of the first scientific institutions to confirm that the Milgauss watch could indeed resist magnetic fields of
up to 1,000 Gauss.
an efficient shielding system
The major innovation at the heart of the Milgauss’ incredible resistance to magnetic interferences is the shield protecting the movement.
Made of ferromagnetic alloys selected by Rolex, it consists of two components, one screwed to the movement and the other to the Oyster
case. Only Rolex-certified watchmakers will ever see it, but the symbol for magnetic flux density - the capital letter ‘B’ with an arrow - is
engraved in this magnetic shield.

instantly
recognisable
The Milgauss works in magnetic fields up
to 1,000 Gauss, hence its name. (In French
‘mille’ means ‘thousand’, and Gauss is a
magnetic field measurement). With its clean
lines and orange seconds hand, shaped like
a lightning bolt, the Milgauss is recognisable
at a glance.
the green sapphire crystal
The Milgauss GV features a black dial with luminescent
orange hour markers at 3, 6 and 9 o’clock, interspersed
with white hour markers. A green sapphire crystal – with a
twist of lime – produces light reflections while preserving
optimal legibility. Yet another Rolex first, inspired by the
brand’s corporate colour.
904l steel
Rolex uses 904L steel for its steel watch
cases. 904L is usually reserved for the chem-
ical industry, where maximum resistance
against corrosion is essential. 904L marries
perfectly with the other precious metals
used by Rolex. A super alloy, 904L is ex-
tremely resistant and highly polishable.
the parachrom
hairspring
A watch is only as precise as its oscillator is
regular. Conventional oscillator hairsprings
are made of ferromagnetic alloys, leaving
them vulnerable to magnetic fields and
shocks. After five years of research, Rolex
created the blue Parachrom hairspring. Craft-
ed from a paramagnetic alloy, it is unaffected
by magnetic fields and up to 10 times more
resistant to shocks. Historically, the unique
blue colour of the hairspring has been a
sign of prestige reserved for only the most
accurate timepieces. Today, it guarantees the
accuracy of your Rolex.
