1. Age in Waterloo Road
At the start of Waterloo Road, we see the younger generation being rebellious by breaking windows,
bullying and running around. They’re wearing hoodies which connote their rebel side, and their
stereotypical personalities. As the older generation think that the younger generation are good with
technology that they always seem to be with their technology, as they’re on their phones and
listening to music.
The teachers in this episode seem to be the anti-stereotype of what they’re expected to be. They
smoke where the pupils are, in the playground. They wear suits, with ties, but seem to be done up
loosely. The older generation are more stressed and emotional, and also more vulnerable. One
teacher seemed to be quite mad and throwing papers off from the roof. Teachers use higher classed
words, as they have a higher vocabulary than the younger generation.
For an interview, it’s set in a pub, to drink and chat as their social space. As it’s an interview they’re
still polite, even though it’s in a pub.
Some teachers take the bus to and from their work. Whereas the younger generation continue with
their rebellious side, by bullying and trying to steal bus tickets. They do not listen to their parents,
but they behave when the police are involved. They seem to care about getting into trouble.
In this episode many straight cuts are used which could connote their simplicity. Shot reverse shots
are used throughout this for conversations to show the reactions between the older and younger
generations.
