• If you are looking to be admitted into the United States, either
temporarily, permanently or as a refugee, you must undergo an
extensive medical examination. Asylum seekers, however, are not
required to take the immigrant medical examination.
• This immigration physical is necessary for verification of overall
good health. Apart from highlighting your health status, this
medical examination permits the acceptance of your application
to enter the United States on medical grounds.
• Understanding the tests that will be carried out can help you in
setting up adequate preparations. We have gone into details
explaining each and every test that is carried out on you. These
tests apply to adults mostly, excluding young children of ages
between 0 - 15 years.

3. • Children of ages within the range specified
above are only required to undergo a full
physical examination
• as well as the necessary immunizations. An
immigrant physical examination includes the
later examinations

4. A physical examination:
• During this physical, various parts of your body will be
examined. These include the eyes, ears, nose and
throat, the heart, lungs, the skin, the abdomen, lymph
nodes and the external genitalia. The purpose of the
physical examination is to determine that your organs
are in working order. It is also critical in discovering
unknown medical problems that can be harmful to
you in future. The Panel Physician (or Civil Surgeon)
does not offer you any treatment or diagnosis if
health issues come up during the immigration
physical.

5. Assessment of medical history:
• You will need supporting documents for this
stage of the immigrant physical.

6. Laboratory tests:
• A wide range of blood tests may be carried
out to ascertain that you are not infected
with the sexually transmitted disease,
Syphilis.

7. Diagnostic tests:
• At this stage, the chest x-ray is undertaken. Pregnancy
tests can also be taken as a precaution while
determining the immigration physicals that are safe at
this juncture. Chest x-rays can assist in pointing out
pneumonia, cystic fibrosis, and lung cancer, among
other diseases.
• If living outside of the United Stated, certified Panel
Physicians can be found after further inquiry at the US
Embassy in your country. Licensed Civil Surgeons near

8. • Before you can take part in the immigrant
Physical, you will need supporting documents
for verification. You should carry your passport
and any other identification document issued by
the government- Ensure you have brought your
vaccination papers for confirmation purposes.
• If you are applying for the Immigrant physical
outside of the United States, you are required to
provide three current visa-sized photographs.

9. • If during the medical examination, the Panel Physician
or Civil Surgeon finds a worrying health condition, you
may qualify for medical grounds of inadmissibility. You
can still apply for immigration later after you have
completed treatment for the health condition. A
medical waiver can exempt you from ineligibility
status.
• Applicants must not substitute Immigration Physicals
for an extensive medical examination by their leading
healthcare provider.
