How did he become a writer?
His inspirations...
Remembering the best author of the XX century
(journalism). In fact, it is
acknowledged by Gabriel
himself that literature and
journalism are taken by the
hand, in other words, jour-
nalism inspired his own
writings and vice versa.
“A man should have two
wives: one to love and one
to sew on his buttons”.
Márquez, Gabriel García. Love
Acclaimed by millions, the
winner of a Novel Prize in
literature in 1982, passed
away last April at the age of
87 because of the lymphatic
cancer he fought against for
many years. Gabriel’s legacy,
which is translated into 40
different languages, has
made a powerful impact on
the book culture of many
countries. His best contribu-
tions to the field of literature
have touched the lives of
many readers, who have felt
the loss of whom they con-
sidered an inspiration.
As most of us know, Gabriel
Garcia Marquez is interna-
tionally recognized as an
author; however, he started
his early years as a journal-
ist. His work as a journalist
included being a reporter
and a movie critic for the
Colombian Newspaper “El
Espectador”. Through these
years, Gabriel focused on
helping his family and he set
the foundations for the ca-
reer he persuaded after
journalism, which suddenly
became “the love of his life”:
literature.
However, he did not leave
aside his first passion
forgotten because it provided fundamental parts of his novels, such
as the settings, the people, and the conflicts. Colombia’s social reality
is reflected throughout Gabriel’s work, who used the successive
waves of political, social and economic disaster as an inspiration
which is embodied in all of his writings. As an example, “Nobody
Writes to the Colone”, “In Evil Hour” and “Big Mama’s Funeral” re-
flected the reality in which Colombia was going through those years.
The answer to this question is
easier than you might think.
Literature runs on Gabriel’s
family’s veins. Gabriel García
Márquez is known by his novels
which have become essential
parts of almost everybody’s life.
Those products are the result of
the influence and inspiration
caused by his grandfather who
used to be a writer too.
Although having his grandfather
as the most important motor,
the context does not have to be
