The document describes the marketing strategies used by rural vendors in Africa. [1] The vendors position themselves along highways where vehicles are forced to slow down, allowing the vendors to rush up and aggressively promote their products to passengers. [2] They make eye contact with passengers and use energetic songs and persuasive words to try to make sales, continuing to pursue vehicles even after they start moving again. [3] The document outlines several lessons from the vendors' strategies, including ensuring visibility of products, targeting areas where vehicles slow down, directly selling with enthusiasm, and being persistent with potential customers.
1. Marketing positioning strategy:My lessons from
Africa-rural regions.
Travelling from the university to another state, I see several local marketers from
their villages and towns at the side of the highway, holding their products for sales
under the scorching sun, sweating but still full of energy, virility and agility.
Positioning themselves in a straight line parallel to the road at an angle
180 degrees and the arm raise like a robot at angle 45 with the product hanging
downwards, placing themselves near the point where vehicles must definitely slow
down due to pot holes, bumps and road damage.
As our bus approaches, there they rushing in a Brownian motion towards
the bus at the open window glasses slightly open or wide open, they shoot their
eyes to every passenger in the bus with smiles or straight look and strong
determination to sell their products. They talk straight away with their marketing
themes and songs ringing in my ears and the ears of other passengers;it’s
irresistible, at times you just have to look at them because of the importunity and
persuasive words.Any slight sound from you will increase their energy to sell you
their product.
As our bus is trying to increase speed some of them were still moving beside the
bus to intensify their last minute to sell or collect their change from a
passenger, infact some might not get paid while some passenger might not even
collect their change.
They are always full of this kind of adrenaline to sell their product.
Lesson 1:They are always positioned to ensure fish-eye view of their of their
product by the passengers
Lesson 2:They are stayed at the point where our bus will surely slow down for
effective presentation.
2. Lesson 3:They advertise their product (Direct selling )with full-bridge energy and
vigorous spirit.
Lesson 4:They are ready to take the risk,if their product is ready to be paid for or
not.
Lesson 5:They are very sensitive,a slight eye contact, chuckle will energize them to
intensity their advertisement until you buy or almost buy.
Lesson 6:They are focus, they do not care about other competitors carrying same
product with them, everybody capitalize on his strength to look for their potential
buyers.
Lesson 7:They are still full of energy inspiteof the scorching sun, harsh weather,
they will never rest until they are satisfied.
In conclusion,Marketing is one of the central energy in every organization with full
participation of new and potential customers with good communication strategy
