and doublesplay, althoughbadmintonrulespermitacourt to be markedfor singlesonly. The

oftencausesconfusiontonewerplayers,isthatthe doublescourthasa shorterserve-length
dimension.
The full widthof the court is6.1 metres(20 ft),and insinglesthiswidthisreducedto5.18 metres
(17 ft).The full lengthof the courtis 13.4 metres(44 ft).The service courtsare markedbya centre
line dividingthe widthof the court,bya short service line ata distance of 1.98 metres(6ft 6 inch)
fromthe net,andby the outerside andback boundaries.Indoubles,the service courtisalsomarked
by a longservice line,whichis0.76 metres(2 ft 6 inch) from the back boundary.
The net is1.55 metres(5 ft 1 inch) highat the edgesand1.524 metres(5ft) highin the centre.The
netpostsare placedoverthe doublessidelines,evenwhensinglesisplayed.
The minimumheightforthe ceilingabove the courtisnotmentioned inthe Lawsof Badminton.
Nonetheless,abadmintoncourtwill notbe suitable if the ceilingislikelytobe hiton a highserve.
Serving
The legal bounds ofa badmintoncourt during various stagesof a rally for singlesand doubles
games
Whenthe serverserves,the shuttlecockmustpassoverthe short service line onthe opponents’
court or it will countasa fault.
Whenthe servingside losesarally,the serve immediatelypassestotheiropponent(s) (thisdiffers
fromthe oldsystemwhere sometimesthe serve passestothe doublespartnerforwhatisknownas
a “secondserve”).
In singles,the serverstandsintheirrightservice courtwhentheirscore iseven,andinher/hisleft
service courtwhenher/hisscore isodd.
In doubles,if the servingside winsarally,the same playercontinuestoserve,buthe/shechanges
service courtsso thatshe/he servestoa differentopponenteachtime.If the opponentswinthe rally
and theirnewscore iseven,the playerinthe rightservice courtserves;if odd,the playerinthe left
4. service courtserves.The players’service courtsare determinedbytheirpositionsatthe startof the
previousrally,notbywhere theywere standingatthe endof the rally.A consequence of thissystem
isthat, each time a side regainsthe service,the serverwill be the playerwhodid notserve lasttime.

5. Badmintonracquets are lightweight,withtopqualityracquetsweighingbetween70and 95 grams
(2.5 and 3.4 ounces) notincludinggriporstrings. Theyare composedof manydifferentmaterials
rangingfromcarbon fibre composite tosolidsteel,whichmay be augmentedbyavarietyof
materials.
There isa wide varietyof racquetdesigns,althoughthe lawslimitthe racquetsize andshape.
Differentracquetshave playingcharacteristicsthatappeal todifferentplayers.The traditionaloval
headshape isstill available,butanisometricheadshape isincreasinglycommoninnew racquets.
Strings
6. Badmintonstringsare thin,highperformingstringswiththicknessesrangingfromabout0.62 to
0.73 mm. Thickerstringsare more durable,butmanyplayerspreferthe feel of thinnerstrings.String
tensionisnormallyinthe range of 80 to 160 N (18 to 36 lbf).Recreational playersgenerallystringat
lowertensionsthanprofessionals,typicallybetween80and 110 N (18 and 25 lbf).Professionals
stringbetweenabout110 and 160 N (25 and 36 lbf).Some stringmanufacturersmeasure the

Shuttlecock
9. A shuttlecock(oftenabbreviatedto shuttle;alsocalledabirdie) is a high-dragprojectile,withan
openconical shape:the cone isformedfromsixteenoverlappingfeathers embeddedintoarounded
cork base.The cork is coveredwiththinleather orsyntheticmaterial.Syntheticshuttlesare often
usedbyrecreational playerstoreduce theircostsasfeatheredshuttlesbreakeasily.Thesenylon
shuttlesmaybe constructedwitheithernatural corkor syntheticfoambase,anda plastic
skirt. Badmintonrulesalsoprovide fortestingashuttlecockforthe correctspeed:
3.1: To test a shuttlecock,hita full underhand strokewhich makescontactwith theshuttlecockover
the backboundary line.Theshuttlecockshall be hit at an upward angleand in a direction parallel to
the side lines.
3.2: A shuttlecockof the correct speed will land notless than 530 mm and notmorethan 990 mm
shortof the other backboundary line.
Shoes
Badminton shoes are lightweightwithsolesof rubberorsimilarhigh-grip,non-markingmaterials.

11. Comparedtorunningshoes,badmintonshoeshave littlelateral high.Highlevelsof lateral support
are useful foractivitieswherelateral motionisundesirableandunexpected.Badminton,however,
requirespowerful lateralmovements.A highlybuilt-uplateral supportwill notbe able toprotectthe
footin badminton;instead,itwill encourage catastrophiccollapse atthe pointwhere the shoe’s
supportfails,andthe player’sanklesare notreadyforthe suddenloading,whichcancause sprains.
For thisreason,playersshouldchoose badmintonshoesrather thangeneral trainersorrunning
shoes,because properbadmintonshoeswill have averythinsole,loweraperson’scentre of gravity,
and therefore resultinfewerinjuries.Playersshouldalsoensure thattheylearnsafe andproper
footwork,withthe knee andfootinalignmentonall lunges.Thisismore thanjusta safetyconcern:
properfootworkisalsocritical inorderto move effectivelyaroundthe court.
