Waubonsee Community College is a massive community college effort with 4 campuses and
over 30,000 students. The college aims to be different from the average community college by
focusing on high quality teaching and learning but also offering flexible support that allows
students to work towards achieving their dreams.
History
In 1966, Waubonsee Community College first came into being when 12 school districts voted to
create the Community College District 516. The next year, Waubonsee Community College
received its name based on the results of a district­wide contest. The winning name means
“early day,” but it was also the name of a Pottawatomie chieftain in the 19th century. In the fall of
1967, classes were held in an assortment of different community venues while the district
formed plans for a permanent campus. Construction soon began on the 243­acre Sugar Grove
campus. However, since Waubonsee experienced high levels of demand for classes, a second
campus was opened shortly thereafter in Aurora. This secondary site houses 33 classrooms as
well as extensive facilities that place a focus on business education. The Rush­Copley Medical
Center campus was also established in Aurora as a third site. Finally, a Plano, Illinois campus
was opened in 2011. All told, Waubonsee Community College currently runs 4 campuses.

At the main campus, the college features an impressive array of state­of­the­art facilities,
including a gymnasium, conference rooms, classrooms, labs, a library, dining areas, an
observatory, a child care center, an auditorium, and a 2­mile nature trail. In order to better reach
the community, Waubonsee also utilizes community facilities as extension sites. As a founding
member of the Illinois Virtual Campus, Waubonsee Community College is a strong supporter of
online education and has devoted itself to developing and supporting substantive online courses.
Whether taking classes in person or online, students can gain college credit, receive business
training, or attend workshops geared towards personal enrichment. Waubonsee Community
College includes engaging social opportunities, such as athletics, student government, and
student clubs.

Waubonsee Community College’s main campus is located just north of Sugar Grove, Illinois in
the western suburbs of Chicago. With Chicago a short drive away, students are always free to
explore the cultural opportunities of a big city!
