Garajonay National Park
The Legend of Gara and Jonay
This is a story about
two “Guanche” lovers
from the Canary
Islands).
“Jonay” was from
Tenerife and “Gara”
from La Gomera,
another island.
They met and fell in
love.
They wanted to marry.
They were so happy!
Unfortunately, the Teide
mountain erupted on the
day they were going to get
married.
Their parents stopped the
marriage, because they
thought it would bring them
bad luck.
Jonay was forced to leave
La Gomera.
Gara cried but her parents
didn’t accept the union.
.
One night, Jonay
swam all the way from
Tenerife and looked
for Gara. They met,
but their parents
discovered them, so
they ran away to the
forest to be together.
But they were found,
and so they decided
to kill themselves.
The legend says,
that’s why today we
can see two big
rocks standing
together.
The park is called
“Garajonay”, and it
is one the most
beautiful on the
islands.
