     Keaton joins staff
     at the Chronicle
The Cass City Chronicle’s editorial staff welcomed its 2011 summer news/edi-
 torial intern early this week.
Like many of the paper’s past interns, Sherri Keaton, 22, this year’s new staff
member, attended Central Michigan University, where she graduated this month
with a Bachelor of Science Degree in journalism.
Keaton, originally from Southfield, transferred to
CMU from Oakland Community College in 2008.
At CMU, Keaton worked as a reporter, senior

                             N.D., for 6 weeks.
Prior to attending CMU, Keaton freelanced for the
Michigan FrontPage newspaper in 2007, writing
weekly columns about young people, education and
current events. The paper awarded her its first “Young
                             Achievers’ Award” in November 2007.
Since then she has earned third-place honors in the
best feature story category from the National
Newspaper Publishers Association for a story that
Sherri Keaton appeared in the Michigan FrontPage newspaper.
Keaton said she is excited about working at the Chronicle and is looking for-
ward to the experience of living and working in a close-knit community. “(I) also
hope to gain a better understanding of the people and the pulse” in the village, she
 added.
While in Cass City for the summer, Keaton is looking forward to finding unique
story ideas and exploring the hopes and dreams of residents she meets.
“It’s my responsibility to invest my time in the places where stories can reach
the hairdressers, dog walkers, soccer moms and executive directors,” she said of
community journalism. “I see a future without limits, where news focuses on

Like many of the paper’s past interns, Sherri Keaton, 22, this year’s new staff member, attended Central Michigan University, where she graduated this month with a Bachelor of Science Degree in journalism. Keaton, originally from Southfield, transferred to CMU from Oakland Community College in 2008. At CMU, Keaton worked as a reporter, senior reporter, videographer and columnist for nearly 3 years for the university’s award-winning newspaper, CM Life. Last summer, she added to her resume by interning at The Forum of Fargo-Moorhead in Fargo, N.D., for 6 weeks. Prior to attending CMU, Keaton freelanced for the Michigan FrontPage newspaper in 2007, writing weekly columns about young people, education and current events. The paper awarded her its first “Young Achievers’ Award” in November 2007. Since then she has earned third-place honors in the best feature story category from the National Newspaper Publishers Association for a story that Sherri Keaton appeared in the Michigan FrontPage newspaper. Keaton said she is excited about working at the Chronicle and is looking for- ward to the experience of living and working in a close-knit community. “(I) also hope to gain a better understanding of the people and the pulse” in the village, she added. While in Cass City for the summer, Keaton is looking forward to finding unique story ideas and exploring the hopes and dreams of residents she meets. “It’s my responsibility to invest my time in the places where stories can reach the hairdressers, dog walkers, soccer moms and executive directors,” she said of community journalism. “I see a future without limits, where news focuses on Arriving to school in (country) style... people.” CASS CITY HIGH School senior Amanda Phillips steps down from a “We’ve been looking forward to Sherri joining our editorial staff for several weeks,” said Tom Montgomery, editor of the Chronicle. “Her enthusiasm for the tractor driven by Travis Klimek, another Cass City senior, in the park- job and this community are unequaled, and I believe her skills as a reporter and a writer are going to impress our readers. ing lot at the school Friday morning.
