Germ cells are specialized cells that give rise to eggs and sperm through meiosis. Fertilization occurs when a sperm cell fuses with an egg cell, forming a single cell called a zygote that contains a new set of chromosomes from each parent. This zygote will undergo cell division and develop into a new individual if fertilization is successful.
