6. Perchè il pavimento in legno / Why a wooden floor?
I
l legno è un materiale che corrisponde perfettamente alle esigenze fisiologiche dell’uomo. E’ un elemento
completamente naturale, utilizzabile per varie prestazioni e diversi impieghi specifici. La sua prima e più im-
portante qualità è sicuramente quella di offrire scarsa conducibilità termica. Proprio per questo fattore, posto
come pavimento o rivestimento, aiuta a mantenere inalterata e costante la temperatura dell’ambiente dove è inse-
rito. E’ altrettanto importante sapere che il legno è un materiale "vivo" e, oltre ad essere un ottimo isolante, svolge
un’ importante funzione di “equilibratore” rispetto all’umidità atmosferica. In genere, in situazioni in cui il grado
di umidità è superiore alla norma, il primo a risentirne è proprio il legno che ne incamera la quantità in eccesso,
stabilizzando così la condizione atmosferica esterna. Il legno custodisce l’umidità assorbita fino a quando le con-
dizioni attorno a lui non si modificano e la libera solo nel momento in cui è lo stesso ambiente esterno ad averne
bisogno. Grazie a questo fenomeno di traspirazione naturale possiamo comprendere perché il legno si modifichi
nel tempo. Altri pregi di questo materiale sono dati da: un ottimo controllo dei movimenti che si innestano sulla
sua superficie ed essere un isolante acustico formidabile. Oltre ad essere molto versatile nell' impiego, il pavimento
in legno rimarrà sempre il rivestimento che si presta con più facilità alla manutenzione ordinaria e straordinaria.
Wood is a material that perfectly responds to human physiological needs. It’s a totally natural element used for
various functions and different purposes. The first and most important quality is that of being a low heating
conductor. And this is the reason why, when used for flooring, it helps maintain a constant temperature in the
environment where it is laid. It is also very important to understand that wood is a “live” material, an excellent
insulator that plays an important role in the balancing of atmospheric humidity. Generally, where there is a high
humidity level, above normal limits, wood is the first to suffer as it takes in the excessive heat in order to balance
the outer atmospheric condition.Wood stores the absorbed humidity until the environmental conditions require it,
only then does wood let humidity out. Thanks to this natural transpiration phenomenon we can understand why
wood modifies in time. Some of the other characteristic values of this material are its excellent surface control of
movements and the excellent acoustic insulation qualities. Besides being one of the most versatile materials, wood
will always be the easiest floor covering to maintain both on a daily basis as well as annual.

The particular structural characteristics employed by old floor in its boards productions guarantee a wide range
of laying techniques to the final client: gluing, floating (except for small staves) and nailing. According to the type

e pensiamo al mondo vegetale, non possiamo fare a meno di ricordare qualcosa che era già presente al
nostro arrivo. Queste strane essenze hanno, da subito e inconsapevolmente, offerto riparo e ristoro, e noi
umani non abbiamo perso tempo a scoprire gli innumerevoli benefici e servigi che ci possono offrire. Fin
dai primi momenti di vita abbiamo approfittato dei loro frutti, poi dei loro rami, per costruire giacigli e attrezzi
ed infine, pian piano, col procedere della nostra esistenza, ne abbiamo carpito i segreti. L’albero é diventato casa,
barca, arma, fuoco, energia e tanto altro ancora.
Oggi siamo sempre più consapevoli che l’albero è vita, è aria, è senza dubbio indispensabile. Conoscere e rispetta-
re gli alberi significa essere consapevoli di un patrimonio inestimabile e necessario. Per alcuni popoli, che vivono
nella foresta, in simbiosi con la natura, la perdita di un albero equivale a quella di un figlio. L’uso consapevole del
legno, per evitare sprechi, il taglio controllato e la ripiantumazione sono nello spirito di chi desidera usare la ma-
teria per garantire un futuro armonico e copioso alle generazioni future. Con rispetto, amore e passione, genera-

the correct season. Logs are selected from the best woods and tested on site to have high quality standards and

ldfloor si colloca al quinto posto nella classifica dei produttori più attenti all'impatto ambientale e al
problema della riforestazione secondo Greenpeace. La guida alla scelta del parquet dell’associazione
ambientalista è stata realizzata raccogliendo le informazioni che le aziende hanno inviato o dichiarato
sui propri siti web aziendali e comprende le più importanti 30 imprese del settore sul mercato italiano. La cata-
logazione si basa su un attento scrutinio delle essenze arboree e della loro provenienza, ispirandosi ai criteri del
Fsc (Forest stewardship council). Le foreste secondo gli standard Fsc devono essere gestite in funzione delle future
generazioni, in base non solo a principi ambientali, ma anche di responsabilità sociale. In questo contesto i legni
e le lavorazioni di Old floor sono tra le meno impattanti in Italia
Old Floor is ranked on the fifth place on the list of producers most concerned with environmental impact and
reforestation problems according to Greenpeace. The environmentalist association guide for choosing the best
parquet, has been made by gathering all the information given and declared by each company on their website,
and includes the 30 most important companies in the Italian wood industry.The cataloguing is based on a careful
count of wood types and their origin, following the criteria stated by the FSC (Forest Stewardship Council).
According to the FSC standards, forests must be controlled and managed for our future generations, not only
environmentally speaking but also as a responsibility towards society. On this basis, Old Floor woods and manu-

ld floor si affida a Catas nella verifica della sicurezza dei prodotti e sul luogo di lavoro. Le aziende
che trattano il legno sono tenute ad indicare l'eventuale presenza di materiali o sostanze che possono
recare danno all'uomo, alle cose o all'ambiente e puntualmente ogni giorno in azienda si eseguono gli
opportuni controlli per rivelare preventivamente eventuali rischi per la salute. L’esposizione ad agenti chimici e
biologici è accuratamente monitorata non solo per i consumatori finali, ma anche a tutela di dipendenti e colla-
boratori. Catas certifica anche le emissioni di sostanze organiche nell’atmosfera.

di 4.8 mm (maxitavole e tavole in rovere) e 4.0 mm (altre essenze e formati).
B) Uno strato centrale in abete (Picea abies Karst.) dello spessore di 5.4 mm per la tipologia 15 mm e di 10.4
per la tipologia 20 mm.
C) Uno strato inferiore della stessa essenza di quella superiore (maxitavole e tavole di rovere) o di una
essenza tecnologicamente compatibile (altre essenze e formati).
La modalità d’ incollaggio dei tre strati che costituiscono il prodotto old floor e la tipologia del collante vinilico
D3 utilizzato, garantiscono elevata stabilità dei materiali nonché assenza di emissione di formaldeide.
Il tavolato viene realizzato con bisellatura sui 4 lati al fine di esaltare le dimensioni dei listoni e impedire che
eventuali imperfezioni del piano di posa possano ripercuotersi sulla planarità superficiale delle tavole.
Il tavolato old floor è realizzato in conformità alla norma uni en 13489:2004 (Elementi multistrato con incastro)
utilizzando materie prime naturali compatibili con le esigenze di rispetto ambientale.
The old floor boards are made with three solid wood layers:
A) A top noble lamella available in different wood types (oak, european steamed walnut, pear, chestnut,
european cherry, steamed acacia, european maple, elm, asian teak, wengè, doussiè, iroko) 4.8 mm thick
(oak maxi floor-boards and floor-boards), while 4.0 mm thick (all other sizes and wood types).
B) A Fir tree central layer (Picea abies Karst.) 5.4 mm thick for the 15 mm size and 10.4 mm thick for the 20
mm size.
C) The bottom lamella of the same type as the top for the oak maxi floor-boards and floor-boards, or any
other technologically compatible wood type (other sizes and wood types).
The gluing system used in the old floor boards and the D3 class vinyl type of gluing guarantee high material
stability as well as absence of formaldehyde emission.
The floor-board is made with bevel on all four sides to exalt size and to avoid that possible imperfections of the
laying surface may effect the floor-board surface planarity.

18. Pavimenti trattati con Olii naturali / Natural oiled floors
O
ld floor, nello sviluppo della nuova linea Thimos, ha scelto di tingere solo con olii di origine naturale.
Un pavimento oliato limita i fenomeni di contrazione e dilatazione del legno, protegge dall’umidità e
dagli sbalzi termici, evita abrasioni e macchie ed elimina l’accumulo di cariche elettrostatiche. Gli olii
naturali mantengono inalterata la traspirabilità della materia prima nonché la trasparenza della finitura che, grazie
ad un elevato indice di rifrazione, permette di evidenziare i caratteri originari della superficie. Thimos è durevole
nel tempo e consente un ripristino straordinario, anche a zone, senza differenze cromatiche. Le tinte risultano
di basso impatto ambientale essendo insignificante il loro contenuto di alcol. Non sono pertanto inquinanti e i
manufatti trattati non rilasciano esalazioni nei locali in cui vengono installati. Thimos è la risposta ecologica al
consumatore consapevole ed attento che non rinuncia a finiture di grande prestigio.
In the development of the new Thimos collection, old floor chose to colour the products only with natural oils.
Oil on floors diminishes the shrinking and expansion of wood, protects it from humidity and sudden changes
of temperature, avoids abrasions and spots, and removes the storing of electrostatic charges. The natural oils help
maintaining transpiration unchanged, as well as finishing transparency. Thanks to the high refraction index of the
finishing transparency, the original surface features are enhanced. Thimos is a long lasting material that tolerates
restoration even by small areas guaranteeing perfect evenness without chromatic differences. The colours are
environmentally friendly as the alcohol content is very little. They are not polluting substances and the products
treated with those oils do not let out fumes once laid in the rooms. Thimos is the ecological answer for a con-
scious consumer that doesn’t give up the luxury of a prestigious finish.

I
l principio che trasforma il legno in Thimos è semplice. Grazie ad un reattivo, utilizzato già nell’800,
in pochi minuti si ottiene l’invecchiamento precoce del parquet. L’azione della mano di fondo
interagisce, infatti, con i tannini contenuti nel legno, provocandone l’ossidazione. La tinteggiatura
delle doghe avviene con l’applicazione di un prodotto oleoso, composto da terre naturali ed estratti da
sostanze quali: cartamo, ricino, cocco, canapa e girasole. La mano a finire, a base di propoli e cere naturali,
completa il trattamento, garantendo protezione e facilità di manutenzione. I parquet thimos sono frutto
di una alterazione eco-compatibile che scaturisce da sostanze organiche che provengono dalla nuda terra.
In questo modo, il legno torna a ricevere ciò di cui si nutriva in origine.
The principle that transforms wood in Thimos is really simple. Thanks to the application of a reactant, that
was used in the ‘800, in just a few minutes the wooden floor undergoes a precocious ageing process.
The undercoat interacts with the tannins, contained in the wood, causing the oxidation. Staves are coloured
by applying an oily product made with natural earths and extracts such as: safflower, castor, coconut, hemp
and sunflower. The finishing coat, made with propolis and other natural waxes, completes the treatment gua-
ranteeing protection and easy maintenance. Thimos parquet is the fruit of an environmentally friendly alteration
originated by organic substances that come directly from the naked earth. Therefore, the piece of wood is
nourished with the same substances as in origin.
