I tried my hand at poetry too. This was done for a Black History Month Arts Council project on the West Indian Living Room display that was mounted at a museum in London.
1. A Step in Time
I took a step back in time
To the history we had created:
Our gaudy opulence
Showcased in fine veneers
And leatherette suites
Sitting on crowded red carpets;
Orange and blue and pink figurines
And painted glasses we seldom used
But treasured in glass cases like museum crystals;
To the history shaped by all our people
Who graced these shores,
Little knowing so many years ago
That today the big city would
Come and stare and that we ourselves
Would wonder at our collective taste.
Poor and quaint today, it seems, by our own standards
And yet we can smile at the warm memories
of childhoods past and long forgotten
As we march relentlessly into a new century.
