Using a grant from the Fund for Animals, the SSCS
purchased its first seagoing vessel, the Sea
Shepherd, in 1978. While this particular vessel is no
longer serving the organization, the SSCS operates
five oceangoing ships as well as several small boats
and watercraft to support its missions. Over the
years, the SSCS has used direct action techniques to
interfere with harmful activities, including
international whaling and sealing. The group also
provides education to youth on marine wildlife and
preservation.
