Critical thinking and evidence-based practice (EBP) drives nursing practice today. Critical thinking can be defined as incorporating data analysis, synthesis and interpretation of data to determine patient interventions. (Green, 2018) Evidence-based practice is defined as “the integration of clinical expertise, the most up-to-date research, and patient’s preference to care.” (Green, 2018) The nursing process to delivering patient care is dynamic. When a nurse incorporates the nursing process of assessment, diagnosis, planning of outcomes, implementation and evaluation in the setting of EBP patient care is substantiated. It allows the nurse to implement care and evaluate the outcome. It further permits for care to be changed if outcomes aren’t as desired. Critical thinking and critical evaluation are interchangeable. It enables the nurse to gather data and process that data to influence better patient care giving rise to better patient outcomes. Patient outcomes have improved when this process has been implemented. Foley catheter utilization driven by EBP and how it’s decreased catheter associated urinary tract infections (CAUTI) is one great example of its success. Patients no longer have a Foley catheter placed without a medically necessary reason. Risks and benefits have been tested, evaluated and substantiated to Foley catheter usage. This has greatly improved (decreased) CAUTI incidence and decreased negative patient outcomes. (Green, 2018) “EBP is aimed at hardwiring current knowledge into common care decisions to improve care processes and patient outcomes” (Stevens, 2013) This is an outstanding improvement to delivering patient care. As nurses we want to facilitate health and well being without causing harm. Exercising critical thinking and EBP when rendering care will help achieve that goal.

Leila is a police officer. She is out of uniform and knocked on Dan's front door of his house and asked is should could enter to enforce a warrant she had. The warrant was a search warrant issued by a magistrate at the Lawrence District Court. His name is Mark McCale, a retired police officer for the state police department in Lawrence. The warrant indicated that "the first floor of Dan's house will be searched for a gun used in connection with a robbery and some jewelry, which was stolen." While looking in Dan's house, Officer Leila smelled what she thought to be gun powder emanating from the second floor. Officer Leila immediately walked upstairs and found a gun at the tops of the stairs. She went to confiscate the gun and while doing so noticed a note attached to the gun with an address on it. Later that afternoon police officers went to the address of the house listed on the note of the gun. A bunch of jewelry was found at this address and collected by the police officers. The address was a known address for stolen jewelry to be pawned. While at Dan's house, Dan told Officer Leila that, "I do not know what you are here for, because I did not rob the Terri Grubb's jewelry store." As a way of experiencing the humanities beyond your classroom, computer, and textbook, you are asked to do a certain type of "cultural activity" that fits well with our course and then report on your experience. Note:
This must not be a report on the same activity (and certainly not the same report) as done for another class, like HUM 111. For instance, one might go to the same museum as done for HUM 111, but this HUM 112 report will focus on entirely different works and displays.
Visit a museum or art gallery before the end of Week 9. Critical thinking and evidence-based practice (EBP) drives nursing practice today. Critical thinking can be defined as incorporating data analysis, synthesis and interpretation of data to determine patient interventions. (Green, 2018) Evidence-based practice is defined as “the integration of clinical expertise, the most up-to-date research, and patient’s preference to care.” (Green, 2018) The nursing process to delivering patient care is dynamic. When a nurse incorporates the nursing process of assessment, diagnosis, planning of outcomes, implementation and evaluation in the setting of EBP patient care is substantiated. It allows the nurse to implement care and evaluate the outcome. It further permits for care to be changed if outcomes aren’t as desired. Critical thinking and critical evaluation are interchangeable. It enables the nurse to gather data and process that data to influence better patient care giving rise to better patient outcomes. Patient outcomes have improved when this process has been implemented. Foley catheter utilization driven by EBP and how it’s decreased catheter associated urinary tract infections (CAUTI) is one great example of its success. Patients no longer have a Foley catheter placed without a medically necessary reason. Risks and benefits have been tested, evaluated and substantiated to Foley catheter usage. This has greatly improved (decreased) CAUTI incidence and decreased negative patient outcomes. (Green, 2018) “EBP is aimed at hardwiring current knowledge into common care decisions to improve care processes and patient outcomes” (Stevens, 2013) This is an outstanding improvement to delivering patient care. Leila is a police officer. She is out of uniform and knocked on Dan's front door of his house and asked is should could enter to enforce a warrant she had. The warrant was a search warrant issued by a magistrate at the Lawrence District Court. His name is Mark McCale, a retired police officer for the state police department in Lawrence. The warrant indicated that "the first floor of Dan's house will be searched for a gun used in connection with a robbery and some jewelry, which was stolen." While looking in Dan's house, Officer Leila smelled what she thought to be gun powder emanating from the second floor. Officer Leila immediately walked upstairs and found a gun at the tops of the stairs. She went to confiscate the gun and while doing so noticed a note attached to the gun with an address on it. Later that afternoon police officers went to the address of the house listed on the note of the gun. A bunch of jewelry was found at this address and collected by the police officers. The address was a known address for stolen jewelry to be pawned. As a way of experiencing the humanities beyond your classroom, computer, and textbook, you are asked to do a certain type of "cultural activity" that fits well with our course and then report on your experience. Your instructor will require you to propose an activity and get instructor approval before you do it and report on it (students should look for any instructions in that respect). Every effort should be made to ensure that this is a hands-on experience (not a virtual one), that this activity fits the HUM 112 class well, and that the activity is of sufficient quality for this university course. The two (2) key types of activities are a museum visit or a performance.
Note:
This must not be a report on the same activity (and certainly not the same report) as done for another class, like HUM 111. For instance, one might go to the same museum as done for HUM 111, but this HUM 112 report will focus on entirely different works and displays.
Visit a museum or art gallery before the end of Week 9. If you are unable to get to a museum or gallery within your area, then a "create your own museum" assignment can be completed in its place (see Option 2 details below). The museum or gallery should have content that fits our course well. Have fun doing this.
Write a two to three (2-3) page report (500-750 words) that describes your experience.
Clearly identify the event location, date attended, the attendees, and your initial reaction upon arriving at the museum or gallery.
Provide specific information and a description of at least ten (10) pieces by a minimum of five (5) different artists.
Provide a summary of the pieces and describe your overall reaction after viewing them.
