San Diego State University has hired a veteran professor and dean from the University of Wisconsin-
Milwaukee to be its next provost and senior vice president for Academic Affairs, replacing Nancy Marlin,
who is stepping down from the role after 15 years.
Chukuka Enwemeka will start his new position July 1, the university announced Thursday.
"I am delighted by this opportunity to serve as the chief academic leader of (the) California State
University system's flagship institution, known for its esteemed community of outstanding students,
innovative teacher-scholars and dedicated staff," Enwemeka said in statement.

Enwemeka earned a bachelor's degree in physiotherapy from the University of Ibadan in Nigeria, his
master's degree in physical therapy from the University of Southern California and his doctorate from
New York University.
Before joining the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee in 2009, he served as a professor and dean in the
School of Health Professions at the New York Institute of Technology from 2003 to 2009. He also has
held positions at the University of Kansas Medical Center and the University of Miami School of
Medicine.
At the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee, he was dean of the College of Health Sciences and a
distinguished professor.
“We are excited to welcome Dr. Enwemeka to the San Diego State University community. His experience
in supporting student success, research and creative endeavors and community engagement distinguished
him in a strong pool of national candidates,” SDSU President Elliot Hirshman said in a statement.
Enwemeka has authored more than 90 original research papers and book chapters. He is a fellow of the
American College of Sports Medicine, a fellow of the American Society for Laser Medicine and Surgery
and is co-editor-in-chief of Photomedicine and Laser Surgery.
Considered an authority in the use of lasers and monochromatic light for therapeutic purposes, he was
part of a team that recently demonstrated that certain wavelengths of LED blue light kill the deadly
Methycillin Resistant Staphylococcus aureus or MRSA, which suggests that blue light might be a viable
alternative to antibiotics.
Before he was hired by SDSU, he was a candidate for the executive vice president and provost position
at Northern Illinois University. In a letter he wrote to NIU in January expressing his interest in that job, he
talked about his fiscal management experience, how he takes "each
organization I have led to the next level" and his passion for student success.
"Peers have told me that I offer inspiring purposeful leadership with a perceptible knack for bringing
people together to amicably pursue defined goals," he wrote. "I am known for being a straight arrow --
what you see is what you get."
3. The SDSU provost serves as the university's chief academic officer and participates in all major
university policy decisions. Marlin, the current provost, will remain at SDSU and will return to a faculty
role, a university spokesman said.
